Access and checks
How we reviewExtended accessThe tool runs code or makes network calls and only reads external data.

This is third-party code. Review the repository files before installing.
What it does
ReaCut is a desktop video editor built on Electron, React and FFmpeg, with multitrack editing, subtitles, keyframes and MP4 or MOV export. The Codex plugin opens this editor in the side panel, and the agent reads the project, imports media, applies batch edits and undoes them. Editing runs locally with no account or cloud. An optional editing assistant connects to an installed, authenticated Codex CLI or Claude Code: proposed edits are shown for review before applying, and undo takes one step. The project is independent and unaffiliated with Jianying and CapCut, and none of their code or assets was copied.
Who it is for. People who edit videos on an Apple Silicon Mac and want Codex to handle batch edits: subtitles, text replacement, cuts.
Good fit when
- A project has dozens of subtitles and one name must be replaced everywhere and the timing shifted.
- A series of clips is assembled from a template with named media and text slots.
- Local editing is needed with no account and no upload of source footage to a cloud.
- The agent should propose timeline edits that you review and undo in one step.
Not a fit when
- The platform is Windows or Linux: no binaries are provided and Windows tests currently fail.
- A mature editor is required: the project is early and the build is marked Preview.
- Cloud sync, cloud AI or AI portrait cutout is needed: none of these exist in the project.
Example request
Open ReaCut in the side panel, import the video from the folder, replace the name "Anton" with "Artem" in all subtitles and show the changes for review.Limitations
The build is verified only on macOS with Apple Silicon, version 0.7.1 is marked Preview and signed ad hoc without Apple notarization. The plugin needs ReaCut 0.5 or newer, the Codex desktop app with the `codex` command and Python 3. Speech recognition runs offline, but the MLX Whisper model is installed separately. The side-panel interface stream runs at about 6 frames per second. Jianying project import is experimental and loses complex styles and keyframes.
How to disable. Delete the ReaCut app and remove the plugin from the Codex plugin list. `.reacut` projects live on your disk and are deleted separately.
FAQ
How do I install the ReaCut plugin for Codex?
Install ReaCut 0.5 or newer, download the plugin ZIP from Releases and run `sh scripts/install-plugin.sh` from the extracted folder. Then open a new Codex chat and ask to open ReaCut in the side panel.
What data does Codex receive?
Project summaries, text and screenshots it requested through plugin tools. Media processing is local, and the side-panel interface frames serve the interface only.
What does the editing assistant send?
When you send a message, the text and a short timeline summary go to the selected CLI. Media files are not attached.
Are there Windows and Linux versions?
No, no binaries are provided and existing Windows tests fail. The verified platform is currently macOS with Apple Silicon.
Which export formats are supported?
MP4 and MOV with H.264 and AAC: the whole timeline, a selection or a custom range. Subtitles export to SRT.
