How we review

Extended accessThe tool runs code or makes network calls and only reads external data.

What it does

Academic Writing Skills works on a manuscript that is already written and does not compose a paper from scratch. The author built the set out of his own workflow while writing papers and a dissertation. Each skill covers one format and task, and the root README is only a routing guide. For English LaTeX papers there is latex-paper-en: compilation, formatting, grammar, section logic, references, figures, tables, pseudocode, title, translation and removal of AI traces. For Chinese theses latex-thesis-zh checks GB/T 7714 references, chapter structure, bilingual captions, abstracts and responses to reviewer comments. For Typst manuscripts, English or Chinese, there is typst-paper. The paper-writing-studio skill polishes and translates academic prose against a venue profile: Nature, IEEE, Elsevier or neutral. Checks are separated from editing. Paper-audit works like a reviewer: it judges readiness for submission, splits blockers from polish, builds a revision roadmap and re-audits after edits. Bib-search-citation searches and filters a local BibTeX library and returns ready citation snippets for LaTeX and Typst. Cover-letter writes a cover letter and checks it against the manuscript. Latex-defense-zh builds a Beamer defense deck from an XeLaTeX thesis repository.

Who it is for. For PhD and master's students and researchers who write papers and theses in LaTeX or Typst and prepare them for journal submission or a defense.

Good fit when

  • A LaTeX paper does not compile and you need the first blocking error explained
  • Before submitting to a journal you want to know which problems block and which are cosmetic, as a reviewer would see them
  • A Chinese thesis must be checked against GB/T 7714 with its bilingual figure and table captions tidied
  • You want the introduction checked for logic gaps, citation stacking and AI-like phrasing
  • You need recent papers on a topic found in references.bib with ready citation snippets for LaTeX and Typst

Not a fit when

  • You have no paper yet and need text from scratch: the set improves existing material and does not generate experiments, citations or conclusions
  • You need work inside a commercial project: the license does not extend beyond academia
  • Your document lives in Word or Google Docs: the skills target LaTeX and Typst sources, and PDF works only for auditing
  • You need translation of fiction or business text: the skill profiles are built for academic prose

Example request

Check the introduction in main.tex for logic gaps, citation stacking and AI-like phrasing, and propose edits

Limitations

The license is academic use only, commercial use is forbidden. The author warns that the set may have rough edges and that paper-audit reports must be verified by you. You need Python 3.10+ and uv, TeX Live or MiKTeX with latexmk and chktex, XeLaTeX with CJK fonts for Chinese LaTeX documents, the Typst CLI for Typst and PyMuPDF for PDF auditing. LaTeX loaders refuse to include files outside the project root. Keys, DOIs and links from your library are provenance, not proof that a paper supports a claim in the manuscript. Online checks are optional and venue rules are best verified against the original source.

How to disable. Delete the skills you want from the agent's skills directory, for example ~/.claude/skills/ or .agents/skills/. The skills edit manuscript files in your project directly, so keep the work under git.

FAQ

How do I install Academic Writing Skills in Claude Code?

With npx skills add bahayonghang/academic-writing-skills. Then open the project with your manuscript and describe the task in plain language, for example "compile the paper with latexmk and explain the first blocking error".

Which skill fits an English LaTeX paper?

latex-paper-en: it compiles and checks formatting, grammar, section logic, references, figures and tables. If you only want a readiness assessment with no source edits, use paper-audit.

How is paper-audit different from the editing skills?

Paper-audit acts like a reviewer: it looks for technical and methodological problems, splits findings into blockers and minor ones and builds a revision roadmap. It does not rewrite the source; the format skills handle edits.

Can I use the set for commercial work?

No. The repository license is academic, so commercial use is not allowed.

What does bib-search-citation do?

It searches and filters entries in a local BibTeX or BibLaTeX library, previews them and returns ready citation snippets for LaTeX and Typst. A matching key, DOI or link in the library does not prove that the work supports a claim in the manuscript.

README in short

The README explains that the set grew out of the author's workflow and improves finished drafts rather than writing papers. It then covers one-command installation, a table of eight skills with their input files, typical prompts, safety rules such as no invented experiments or citations, the finding format as LaTeX comments with severity and priority, environment requirements, the repository layout and links to the documentation.

# Paper Audit Skill v6.0

`paper-audit` is **deep-review-first**: behave like a serious reviewer — find technical, methodological, claim-level, and cross-section issues; keep script-backed findings separate from reviewer judgment; return a structured issue bundle plus a revision roadmap. Use it for audit and review, not as the first tool for source editing, sentence rewriting, or build fixing.
