What it does
Codex SEO is a set of skills for OpenAI Codex CLI that runs an SEO audit of a website and returns a prioritized action plan. It is a port of Claude SEO: the methodology and scripts come from there, and the Codex adaptation is separate. In Codex a call looks like `$seo audit https://example.com`; a natural-language request works too. A full audit goes through up to 17 roles in turn: technical checks, content and E-E-A-T, structured data, speed, AI search and others. Each role writes its findings to a file, and the result is assembled into a plan where every recommendation says what supports it and how to verify the outcome. Separate commands cover one task each: `$seo page` analyzes a page, `$seo schema` finds and generates Schema.org markup, `$seo geo` rates the chance of being cited in AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity answers, `$seo hreflang` checks language versions. If a page shows content only after JavaScript runs, a headless browser opens it. Reports are saved in Markdown, and `$seo google report` makes a PDF.
Who it is for. SEO specialists and site owners working in Codex CLI who want an audit with an action plan and no paid service.
Good fit when
- A new site or a redesign: a full pre-launch audit with a prioritized fix list is needed.
- A single page, such as a pricing section, ranks poorly and needs a deeper look than the general report.
- You need to see how suitable pages are for citation in AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity and whether the site is open to AI crawlers.
- The site is multilingual, and hreflang and the sitemap must be checked.
- A summary from Search Console, PageSpeed and GA4 with a PDF export is wanted after connecting your own Google keys.
Not a fit when
- Work happens in Claude Code: the original Claude SEO exists for it, while this port is written for Codex CLI.
- Yandex position data and Russian webmaster services are needed: the project is about Google and AI search.
- One small thing must be checked fast: a full audit in the main session uses many tokens.
Example request
`$seo audit https://example.com`, give a prioritized fix plan and separate items for AI search.Limitations
OpenAI Codex CLI with skills support and Python 3.11 to 3.14 are required. The installer copies the skills to `~/.agents/skills/` and creates an isolated Python environment with a headless browser. Pages and collected data go to the OpenAI model behind your Codex session. Without Google API keys Core Web Vitals are estimated roughly and indexing status is inferred from the page. Pages whose key content loads only on scroll or click give noisy results. The main documentation is written in Chinese, and an English version exists.
How to disable. Run `bash uninstall.sh` from the `codex-seo` folder: it removes the skills. Saved reports stay on disk and are deleted by hand.
FAQ
How do I install Codex SEO?
Clone the repository with `git clone --depth 1 https://github.com/zhtyyx/codex-seo.git` and run `bash codex-seo/install.sh`. On Windows run `install.ps1` in PowerShell. Then call `$seo audit <url>` in Codex CLI.
Are API keys required?
No, the basic audit works without them. Google keys are connected with `$seo google setup` for real PageSpeed, CrUX, Search Console and GA4 data, and they are stored only on your machine.
How does Codex SEO differ from Claude SEO?
It is a port of the same set to OpenAI Codex CLI: skills are picked up from `~/.agents/skills/` and called through `$seo`. The audit methodology and scripts are shared, and the version builds on Claude SEO 2.5.0.
What leaves my computer?
The pages under review and their data are seen by the OpenAI model behind your Codex session. Reports stay in files, and some checks read public sources such as Wikipedia, Reddit and Common Crawl. The full list is in `PRIVACY.md`.
Are React and Next.js sites supported?
Yes. When content appears only after JavaScript, a headless browser opens the page, and a single-page app is checked the way a visitor sees it.
