What it does
SEO Coach works in Claude Code and Codex as a coach and does not hand out a whole-site report. On each turn it picks one small check on a real site: what to inspect, why, and what counts as done. The coach works through the first case itself, does the second with you, and gives you the third to do alone. Conclusions rest on observations: live data is kept apart from official guidance, third-party estimates and what is unverified, and the coach invents no defects when a page is healthy. Learning runs along three tracks. The first goes from a goal and baselines to one reversible change, a live recheck and a delayed review. The second teaches choosing queries, judging intent and the SERP, mapping queries to pages and writing a brief. The third is practice on four articles, with completion judged by eight gates. A library of 18 modules loads on demand: indexing, robots.txt, sitemaps, canonicals, titles, Search Console and GA4, internal links, AI search, ecommerce and local SEO. For Search Console data a local panel ships alongside. The service-account key is read only by the local gsc.mjs tool, the panel opens at 127.0.0.1:8791, and the key is never pasted into chat. Without a site of your own you can practise on demo data. With your consent the coach keeps seo-progress.md, seo-actions.md and other files so it can resume at the last gap and remind you about retests after 1, 7 and 30 days.
Who it is for. Site owners, marketers and writers who know SEO from courses but have never completed the loop from a baseline to a verified change on their own site.
Good fit when
- The site is young and it is unclear where to start: indexing, titles or structure
- You have no paid tools and need to read a SERP by hand in a private window
- An article gets no traffic and you need the smallest check that explains why
- You want to connect Search Console and browse queries, pages and cannibalization in a local panel
- You want to lock in a skill and return to a gap after 1, 7 and 30 days
Not a fit when
- You need a one-off audit of the whole site with a health score: the skill produces no such report
- You need articles or a text package delivered: the coach teaches you to write them yourself
- A large migration, mass deindexation or enterprise international SEO is under way: the README sends such cases to engineers and specialists
- You need paid-ads advice: the skill does not cover it

- The skill promises no rankings, traffic or indexing and does not replace a specialist during migrations, redesigns or mass loss of indexed pages.
- The Search Console panel ships in English and two Chinese languages, and the agent generates any other language once. There is no Russian interface out of the box.
- The panel needs a Google Cloud service account, restricted-user access in Search Console and Node.js. Average position from Search Console is not a live SERP rank.
- The optional hooks router hooks/seo_coach_router.py changes agent settings. Enable it only after reading hooks/README.md.
How to disable. Delete the seo-coach folder from ~/.claude/skills or ~/.codex/skills. If you enabled the hooks router, remove the added entries from the agent settings following hooks/README.md, and delete the service-account key from ~/.seo-coach/.
FAQ
Do I need paid tools for SEO Coach?
No. Basic practice is manual: a private window, a note of the query, location, language, device and date, and a read of the first results. Ahrefs, Semrush and DataForSEO are not needed for the fundamentals.
How do I connect Search Console to SEO Coach?
Enable the Search Console API in Google Cloud, create a service account and save its JSON key to ~/.seo-coach/gsc-service-account.json. Add the account's email to Search Console as a restricted user, then run `node assets/gsc-tools/gsc.mjs check` and `node assets/gsc-tools/gsc.mjs serve` and open http://127.0.0.1:8791/. Never paste the key into chat.
How is SEO Coach different from a site audit skill?
An audit hands back a report on the whole site. The coach picks one step, demonstrates it and withdraws hints until you repeat the analysis on an unfamiliar page. It gives no site health score.
Where does the skill keep progress?
With your consent, in seo-progress.md, seo-actions.md, seo-strategy-workbook.md, seo-writing-portfolio.md and seo-ga4-log.md. On the next run the coach continues from the last gap.
Is Node.js required for SEO Coach?
Node.js is needed for the local Search Console panel: its gsc.mjs tool runs with node. Manual SERP practice works without the panel.
