What it does
The repository ships a `heptabase-cli` skill following the Agent Skills specification. The agent works with Heptabase through the `heptabase` command: reads and creates notes and journal entries, appends text, manages tags and tag databases with properties, checks backlinks and highlights, and reads PDFs, audio and video transcripts and attached files. The skill imports files and pages by URL, shows whiteboard structure, lints layout, takes a whiteboard screenshot and edits mind maps. Links on `app.heptabase.com` are parsed through the CLI rather than opened in a browser. It suits Claude Code, Codex CLI and OpenCode.
Who it is for. Heptabase users who keep research and notes in the app and want an agent to take over routine work.
Good fit when
- An agent builds today's journal from rough notes.
- Cards must be found by a property in a tag database.
- Quotes by page must be pulled from an attached PDF.
- A whiteboard has grown and its layout is checked before building a mind map.
Not a fit when
- The Heptabase CLI has not yet been obtained from the desktop app.
- The CLI version is outside `0.9.x` and cannot be updated.
- Notes must stay unchanged even when marked as created by AI.
Example request
Read my journal for today through the Heptabase CLI, find related cards and append a day summary as a separate paragraph.Limitations
The skill works only with the local Heptabase CLI, which comes from the desktop app. The compatibility range is stored in the skill, currently `0.9.x`. If the CLI version differs the skill requires stopping and updating the app or the package. The agent can create and edit notes, marked `Created by AI` by default, so keep a backup of the workspace. The skill allows the `heptabase`, `jq` and `mktemp` commands.
How to disable. Remove the plugin with `/plugin uninstall heptabase@heptabase-cli-skills` or delete the skill folder from the skills directory. Notes in Heptabase stay as they are.
FAQ
How do I install the skill in Claude Code?
Through the marketplace: `/plugin marketplace add heptameta/heptabase-cli-skills` and `/plugin install heptabase@heptabase-cli-skills`. An `npx skills add` option exists as well.
Where does the CLI come from?
The `heptabase` command is installed from the Heptabase desktop app. On Windows `heptabase.cmd` is added.
How do I update the skill?
Refresh the marketplace with `/plugin marketplace update heptabase-cli-skills` and the plugin itself, then `/reload-plugins`.
What if Codex says the CLI server is not ready?
See the Codex sandbox note in `skills/heptabase-cli/references/codex-sandbox.md`.
How does the skill mark agent-made notes?
By default notes get a Created by AI mark. The `--no-created-by-ai` flag turns it off for human-authored content.
