What it does
ielts-claude-skills is a set of four skills that turns Claude Code into an IELTS preparation coach. The free version 1.0 consists of Markdown SKILL.md files with no scripts or database. The `/ielts` skill finds out the target score, the exam date and what is worth practicing today. `/ielts-writing` scores an essay on four criteria and marks problems sentence by sentence. It then rewrites the text to the target score for comparison and checks how you understood the topic. The coach does not write the essay for you; it checks and shows the gap. `/ielts-reading` analyzes reading mistakes, extracts synonym substitutions and breaks True, False, Not Given questions down along a chain of evidence. `/ielts-speaking` prepares stories for part two, follow-up questions for part three and useful expressions. The instructions and the conversation with the user are in Chinese.
Who it is for. For people preparing for IELTS with Claude Code who read Chinese, and for developers who want to adapt the coach to TOEFL, GRE or another exam.
Good fit when
- You want to check a Task 2 essay: four criteria, sentence-level marks and a target-score version for comparison
- Reading mistakes keep repeating and you need a per-question breakdown with synonym substitutions and an evidence chain for True, False, Not Given
- The exam is two weeks away and you need to decide what to practice today: `/ielts` asks for the target score and date
- For the speaking part you need a story on a topic such as describing a trip and the follow-up questions part three will ask
- You want to take the four SKILL.md files as a base and retune them for another exam
Not a fit when
- You need listening, vocabulary, full mock exam practice and progress tracking: the free version has none of them
- You do not read Chinese: the language of the instructions and the dialogue is Chinese
- You prepare for another exam without retuning: criteria and prompts are built for IELTS

The free version 1.0 has four skills. The full V5.0 package with twelve coaches, PDFs and a knowledge base is sold separately and is not in the repository. The score and analysis from the AI are educational feedback and do not count as an official result. The skills are stateless: they keep no study profile and do not remember past work. The MIT license covers only version 1.0, and the paid V5.0 package and its materials fall outside it.
How to disable. Delete the four folders ielts, ielts-writing, ielts-reading and ielts-speaking from ~/.claude/skills and restart Claude Code.
FAQ
How do I install the IELTS skills in Claude Code?
Clone the repository and run `cp -r ielts ielts-writing ielts-reading ielts-speaking ~/.claude/skills/`. On Windows PowerShell use `Copy-Item -Recurse` with the same four folders and the path `$env:USERPROFILE\.claude\skills\`. Then restart Claude Code and type `/ielts`.
What is in the free version?
Four skills: the general entry `/ielts`, writing check `/ielts-writing`, reading analysis `/ielts-reading` and speaking prep `/ielts-speaking`. Listening and vocabulary are not in the free version.
Can I use these skills for TOEFL or GRE?
Yes, the MIT license allows it. Fork the repository and edit the SKILL.md files: you can change the coach's personality, the scoring criteria and how roles are split between skills.
Do the skills save my work and scores?
No. The free skills are stateless and keep no study archive. Storage of work, mistakes and score trends is available only in the paid V5.0.
Is this an official IELTS score?
No. The coach's score is educational feedback. The project is not affiliated with IELTS, British Council, IDP or Cambridge.
