What it does
The `legal-research` skill sets the order of legal search in Chinese law for an agent. Sources are statutes, administrative regulations, judicial interpretations, departmental rules, local regulations and guiding cases. The output is a structured report with exact article references, a breakdown of general and special norms, old and new editions, and limitation periods. Version 1.1 added checks for source hierarchy, edition currency, citation accuracy and consistent law names. It includes keywords for similar-case search, four reasoning schemes (deductive, inductive, analogical, abductive) and an adapter for paid databases such as `北大法宝` that the user configures. The `mcp_server.py` file runs an MCP server with nine tools for the same checks.
Who it is for. Lawyers and law students working with Chinese law, and ordinary people with a question about a labor or contract dispute.
Good fit when
- A lawyer collects norms and interpretations on a contract dispute before a consultation.
- A student prepares a case analysis and wants to see how a conclusion is built under one of four schemes.
- An employee checks whether an employer may skip social insurance contributions and gets a report with norms.
- You need keywords for similar-case search by cause of action and disputed points.
Not a fit when
- The question concerns another country law, since the skill targets mainland China.
- A final legal document would be signed without a lawyer review.
- There is neither a law database nor web search, and citation accuracy is critical.
Example request
Find the norms on compensation for unlawful termination of an employment contract and build a report with the skill template.Limitations
The skill covers only Chinese law and is written in Chinese. Law texts are not in the repository: the agent takes them from search or from a database connected through the adapter, and without one the model may get an article number or edition wrong. The README install line contains the placeholder `your-username`, so substitute `Golden2002`. The report helps navigate norms and does not replace legal advice. One author maintains the repository, and the latest changes date from August 2026.
How to disable. Remove the `legal-research` folder from the agent skills directory and stop the MCP server if you connected it.
FAQ
How do I install it?
The README describes `npx openskills install` with a placeholder repository name, so use `Golden2002/legal-research-skill`. Manually, copy the `legal-research` folder into `.claude/skills/`.
Does it work without Claude Code?
Yes. The author suggests pasting the `SKILL.md` text as a prompt into an ordinary chat such as `Doubao` or `DeepSeek`. Automatic citation checks will not run there.
Which sources does it use?
Statutes, administrative regulations, judicial interpretations, departmental rules, local regulations and guiding cases. Scholarly opinions and unenacted drafts are excluded.
What does the MCP server do?
Nine tools: citation, period and report validation, law name normalization, norm hierarchy comparison, case search, reasoning analysis and recommendation, and a database list. The server starts from `mcp_server.py`.
Can I connect a paid database?
Yes, through the adapter: the README names `北大法宝`. The user obtains API access and a key from the database provider.
