What it does
The skill Mai You Pu (Chinese: 麦有谱) matches items from the McDonald's China menu. The user names what is already on the tray, and the agent picks a recipe such as a double cheeseburger with nuggets. The library holds 13 recipes: 12 regular and one historical limited-time one. Each lists its source and an adaptation note, and in "only what I have" mode the agent shows combos that need no extra purchase. With the official McDonald's MCP connected, the skill looks for new items and the return of seasonal ones. Without confirmation the agent marks a recipe as unverified and promises no comeback. The agent then writes post copy and builds a recipe card. The skill cannot order food or publish posts. A web demo on GitHub Pages sits alongside: matching runs locally in the browser, with no token and no install.
Who it is for. McDonald's customers in China who look for unusual combos of ready menu items, and authors of short food posts.
Good fit when
- The tray holds a double cheeseburger and two nuggets, and you do not want to buy anything extra
- You want to check whether a seasonal item returned and get an answer with a source rather than a rumor
- A social post needs a short caption and a recipe card picture
- You want to browse combos of dessert, fries and drinks and save favorites in the web demo
Not a fit when
- You want to order food, pay or see a live price: the skill orders nothing, and prices and availability depend on the restaurant
- You are outside China: recipes are adapted for mainland China by default
- You need recipes with a verified taste: the project did not try them and says so in the README
- You want matches from another chain's menu: the recipe library is entirely about McDonald's

- The author did not taste-test the recipes, and prices and item availability depend on the restaurant.
- Live queries about new items work only with the official McDonald's MCP connected, which needs a client that supports remote MCP, skills and environment variables. Without MCP the library and the web demo remain.
- The promotions snapshot in the web demo is dated 18 October 2026 and does not update itself.
- Dish pictures, names and trademarks belong to their owners and fall outside the MIT license.
How to disable. Delete the `mai-you-pu` folder from the skills directory (`~/.codex/skills` for Codex) and restart the client. The McDonald's MCP connection is removed separately in the client settings.
FAQ
How do I install Mai You Pu in Codex?
Run `mkdir -p ~/.codex/skills` and `cp -R skills/mai-you-pu ~/.codex/skills/` from the cloned repository, then restart the client. In chat the call starts with `$mai-you-pu`.
Do I need a McDonald's token?
The web demo and offline recipe matching need no token. Live search for new items requires the official McDonald's MCP; `MCP_INTEGRATION.md` describes the setup.
Does the skill order food?
No. It finds recipes, checks seasonal items and writes post copy or a card. Ordering, payment and publishing stay with you.
Where do the recipes come from?
The library of 13 recipes lives in `skills/mai-you-pu/references/recipes.json`. Each recipe lists its source and an adaptation note: official history, an official idea simplified, or an idea from the media.
Is this an official McDonald's project?
No. The author calls it an independent creative project and an entry in McDonald's programmer contest. The code is MIT licensed.
