What it does
Master-skill is a set of skills where each teacher answers in the manner of one historical Buddhist master and only from that master's declared texts. It ships 15 teachers from the Indian, Chinese, Tibetan and Theravada traditions, among them Huineng, Xuanzang, Tsongkhapa, Milarepa, Ajahn Chah and Mahasi Sayadaw. You call a teacher with a command like /master-huineng. Every statement about the teaching carries a source reference in the teacher's declared format: a CBETA ID for the Chinese tradition, Toh or BDRC for the Tibetan, PTS or SuttaCentral for the Theravada. Key passages sit in the sources folder, so citations work offline. When a passage is missing, the skill can ask the FoJin database for text and adds its link only when a real text ID comes back. Besides one-on-one chats there are /compare-masters to set voices of different traditions side by side, /master-debate for a multi-round dialectic, /master-curriculum for a study path and /master-help to pick whom to ask. The /create-master generator builds new teachers from canonical sources. The skill refuses to rank schools against each other, diagnose practice, discuss supernatural powers or give medical advice.
Who it is for. For students and researchers of Buddhism who want answers with checkable references to primary sources, in Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, OpenCode or Gemini CLI.
Good fit when
- You want to understand sudden versus gradual awakening and the answer must cite the Platform Sutra with its T48n2008 ID
- You want to compare how Chinese, Tibetan and Theravada traditions explain emptiness: /compare-masters does that
- You need a study order for one tradition, which /master-curriculum builds
- You are unsure whom to ask about your situation: npx master-skill recommend picks a teacher from the question text
- A research paper needs quotations from CBETA, BDRC or SuttaCentral with IDs instead of a retelling from the model's memory
Not a fit when
- You need a living teacher to guide your practice: the skill itself tells you to seek a qualified teacher and does not replace one
- You want rankings of schools, karma or past-life readings or medical advice: the skill declines such questions
- You want a conversation with a contemporary or a specific living person: the ready teachers are built from historical texts
- You need an answer without AI synthesis: the author states that the teachers' lines are generated and do not reproduce the teachers' actual words

- Teachers answer in Chinese; the English README gives translations. Answers are AI synthesized from texts and meant for study and reference.
- npx master-skill installs into ~/.claude/skills, which Claude Code and OpenCode read. Codex CLI and Gemini CLI need different steps, described in docs/install.en.md.
- Code is MIT and content is CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 and CC BY 4.0, so some material is non-commercial only.
- For citations beyond the bundled passages the skill queries fojin.app. If FoJin is unreachable, answers narrow to passages in the sources folder.
- The author publishes accuracy evaluation results (240 test cases) and asks to read them together with the method description.
How to disable. Delete the folder of the teacher you want from ~/.claude/skills/, for example master-huineng, or all master-* folders together with compare-masters, master-debate and master-curriculum. npx master-skill doctor shows where the installed files live.
FAQ
How do I install Master-skill in Claude Code?
Run npx master-skill install --all to install all 20 skills, or npx master-skill install master-huineng for one teacher. After that /master-huineng and /compare-masters are available in chat. npx master-skill update --all upgrades the set.
How do I pick a teacher if I do not know whom to ask?
Run npx master-skill recommend with the text of your question, for example about nianfo practice, or call /master-help. The README also has a table of situations: a scattered mind points to Xuyun, Zhiyi or Ajahn Chah, the logic of sutras to Xuanzang, emptiness to Nāgārjuna, Huineng or Tsongkhapa.
Does Master-skill work in Codex CLI and Gemini CLI?
Yes, but npx writes files to ~/.claude/skills, which Codex CLI and Gemini CLI do not read. docs/install.en.md describes separate steps for them, and the author marks those as tested.
Where do the citations come from?
Each teacher has a declared list of sources with CBETA, BDRC, Toh, SuttaCentral or PTS IDs. The skill's rules forbid inventing IDs, and it adds a FoJin link only when a real text ID is returned.
Can I create my own teacher?
The /create-master command generates a teacher from Buddhist primary sources and passes the result through a two-stage review: doctrinal accuracy first, then voice fidelity. The rules forbid fictional personas.
