What it does

OpenFilm teaches a coding agent to make video. The openfilm skill sends the agent to the `npx -y openfilm@latest` command, which prints a manual of about a thousand words. A film is a folder with a `film.html` file: tracks cut together from animated pages, video, pictures and sound, styled with CSS. Each frame is drawn by a page with a `frame(t)` function that can use anything a browser can: three.js, WebGL, canvas, SVG, GSAP. `openfilm open` shows the film in Studio, a local browser editor where you can move elements on a page, change text and color and trim clips on the timeline. Edits are saved into the film's files, so the agent sees them. `openfilm look` checks the film: it draws a contact sheet twice in shuffled frame order and names any differences, page errors, fonts that failed to load and missing sound files. `openfilm render` produces the MP4, with the `--4k`, `--blur` and `--alpha` flags. `openfilm get` fetches voice, music, images and video from connected services such as ElevenLabs, OpenAI, Google and fal, with your own keys.

Who it is for. For developers and product makers who want videos, animation and demos from an agent and want to edit them by hand.

Good fit when

  • You want a 20-second launch video for a CLI or a product, with music and titles
  • A lyric video or a presentation has to become a film
  • The agent made a film and you need to refine it by hand on the timeline
  • You need a clip with a transparent background or 4K output
  • You want voice-over, subtitles or stills exported on their own

Not a fit when

  • You need photorealistic shots from a video model: OpenFilm assembles films from pages, and models come in only as a source of clips and images
  • You want to edit finished footage with no animation or text: an ordinary video editor is enough
  • You want a cloud service with nothing to install: OpenFilm, its CLI and Studio run on your machine

Example request

Make a 20-second launch video for my CLI with music and large titles, and open it in Studio

Limitations

Node 22.2 or newer and ffmpeg are required, plus git for Studio's saved versions. The first run downloads a headless Chromium, about 100 MB. Open Studio in a Chromium-based browser such as Chrome or Edge: that is the engine films are drawn and exported with, so the preview matches the result. A film page must draw the same frame for the same t, or the render drifts. The version at the time of checking is 0.2.7. Voice, music, images and video need your own service keys, and their paid plans are yours. A desktop app for macOS and Windows also exists; the skill and the CLI are described here.

How to disable. Remove the openfilm skill from the project's skills folder or from `~/.claude/skills/`. If you installed the CLI globally, run `npm uninstall -g openfilm`.

FAQ

How do I install OpenFilm in Claude Code?

Run `npx skills add openfilm/openfilm`. If your agent has no skills support, ask it to run `npx -y openfilm@latest` and follow the manual it prints.

Do I need an account for OpenFilm?

No. Making, editing and rendering films needs no account. Keys are needed only for voice, music, images and video from third-party services.

How does OpenFilm differ from Remotion and HyperFrames?

OpenFilm needs no framework: each frame is drawn by an ordinary page with a `frame(t)` function, and the film is assembled in `film.html` from tracks. Hand edits happen in Studio.

What is the one-t rule?

The same t always draws the same picture, whatever was drawn before. That is why frames can be requested in any order and in parallel, and the render comes out the same on any machine.

Which export formats does Studio offer?

Video, GIF, sound and its stems, subtitles, stills, slides, transparent video and the timeline for Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve.

README in short

The project rests on three ideas: one `film.html` file, one `frame(t)` function and one real editor. The docs then cover installation, the CLI commands, Studio, the film format with a markup example and building from source.
