What it does
Dex is a starter kit for Claude Code and Cursor: a vault folder with notes, priorities, people and tasks, with skills, hooks and MCP servers on top. `/setup` runs first-time setup for your role, `/daily-plan` builds the day plan, `/daily-review` closes the day, `/dex-doctor` checks the setup and `/dex-update` previews an update. Claude Code hooks inject session context, and the task MCP server syncs checkboxes across meeting notes, people pages and projects. Calendar, email and meeting services are optional connections. For Codex and other apps, release v1.97.13 ships portable files, but the author does not yet promise a supported install.
Who it is for. Managers and team leads who keep tasks, meetings and people in notes and want the agent to remember context.
Good fit when
- In the morning an agent builds the day plan from priorities and tasks.
- A meeting needs a brief on a person drawn from your notes.
- After a meeting, agreements and promises land in tasks.
- In the evening the day is closed with a review of what was done.
Not a fit when
- Notes must not reach a model provider: the app sends it the context it reads.
- Work happens on Windows and `/dex-update` or background meeting sync is required: the README lists them as unavailable.
- You want a single skill, not a whole system of hooks, MCP servers and background jobs.

The Mac installer runs as `curl ... | bash`, so read `install.sh` before running it. Windows support is a preview: `/dex-update`, `/dex-rollback` and connected-service keys do not work yet. Calendar, background meeting sync and launch-at-login jobs are Mac only. Hooks do not fire in Cursor, and Codex has no supported install. Python 3.11 or newer, Node.js 18 or newer and Git are required.
How to disable. Close the Dex session and revoke the app's access to the folder, or disable the plugin in it. Your notes stay in the vault. Background jobs installed separately are not stopped by the plugin.
FAQ
What is a vault in Dex?
The folder holding your notes and configuration. You open it in an app, and it stays with you when you change apps.
Which commands come first?
`/setup` for a new vault, then `/daily-plan` and `/daily-review`. `/dex-doctor` checks the setup.
Does Dex work in Cursor?
Yes, as a full vault with skills and configured tools. Claude Code hooks do not fire in Cursor.
Does data stay on my computer?
Notes live in your folder. The agent app may still send the context it reads to the model provider, and connected services contact their own servers.
What if the install stops?
Keep the error message and open the help on heydex.ai: some prerequisites may already be installed. Report the bug in the repository issues without private vault contents.

README in short
The README walks through steps: choose an app, choose a vault, get a first result. It then explains how an app connects to Dex through a bridge and what happens automatically versus on demand. Separate sections cover privacy, updates, Windows status and manual Cursor setup.
