What it does
CodeKanban is a local service with a web page that gathers a developer's terminals and AI tools (Claude Code, Codex) across several projects. It detects what a tool is doing: idle, working or waiting for approval, and notifies when a task finishes. The service keeps a history of AI conversations with prompt search, shows token generation speed (last, last 5 and 20 generations, averages), holds notes and manages Git worktrees. It uses a hybrid Git engine: fast go-git for status and diff and system Git for commits, so hooks, signing and user config keep working. The repository also ships an installable Codex bundle built around a single public CLI, `codekanban-cli`. The `packages/codekanban-cli` package contains the `codekanban-cli` skill, and `packages/node-sdk` is a library for JS integrations. The skill drives the `project`, `web-session`, `workflow`, `session`, `terminal`, `file` and `auth` scopes: the agent lists projects, starts and follows web sessions and continues terminal sessions. The Kanban task scope is gone from it. The service listens on `http://127.0.0.1:3007` by default, deploys as a single file with a local database and starts with `npx codekanban`.
Who it is for. Developers who keep several terminals with Claude Code and Codex across projects, and anyone who wants the agent itself to start and continue such sessions.
Good fit when
- Several agents work in different folders and you need one screen with their status: working, waiting for approval, finished
- You want to find an old prompt or answer from your AI conversation history in one click
- Parallel branches run through Git worktrees and you want to manage them from one page
- The agent itself should open a web session in a project with `codekanban-cli web-session`
- You want to compare token generation speed across recent runs
Not a fit when
- One session in one terminal is enough: a service with a database and a panel adds overhead
- You need a Kanban task board: the task scope was removed from `codekanban-cli`
- You cannot keep a service on the machine: it listens on a port and stores conversation history
Example request
Use codekanban-cli to list the projects and open sessions, then start a web session in /repo and give it the task of fixing a failing testLimitations
- The service is on `127.0.0.1:3007` by default; for another address pass `--base-url`, and with authentication enabled save the token with `codekanban-cli auth save-token`.
- Installation uses Node.js 20.19 or 22.12 and newer, and a source build needs Go 1.25 and pnpm.
- The skill targets Codex: after installing the CLI and skill, restart Codex so it finds the skill.
- Token speed measurements are not backfilled for old conversations, and with automatic migration disabled the database migration runs by hand with `go run . -m`.
How to disable. Stop the service process, and if you installed the system service with the `--install` flag, remove it with `--uninstall`. Remove the package with `npm uninstall -g codekanban` and delete the skill from the Codex skills folder.
FAQ
How do I start CodeKanban?
Run `npx codekanban` or install the package with `npm install -g codekanban@latest` and start `codekanban`. The service page opens by default at `http://127.0.0.1:3007`.
What can codekanban-cli do?
It drives the `project`, `web-session`, `workflow`, `session`, `terminal`, `file` and `auth` scopes. `web-session` is advised for structured interactive work, and `workflow start` is for when a PTY-style startup is explicitly wanted.
Where does the CLI store the token?
In the user config folder: `%APPDATA%\codekanban-cli\session.json` on Windows and `$XDG_CONFIG_HOME/codekanban-cli/session.json` or `~/.config/codekanban-cli/session.json` on macOS and Linux.
How is CodeKanban different from an ordinary agent kanban?
It is not a task board: the Kanban task scope was removed from the CLI. The service follows terminals and Claude Code and Codex sessions and keeps conversation history.
How does CodeKanban know an agent is waiting for approval?
The service watches running Claude Code, Codex and other tools and shows whether a tool is idle, working or waiting for approval. A notification arrives when a task finishes.

README in short
The README starts with a quick start through `npx codekanban` and a feature list: several projects and terminals, tool status detection, history, token speed, Git worktrees and notes. It then describes the installable Codex bundle around `codekanban-cli` with defaults and the saved session path. The development guide lists requirements, dependency installation, run modes and the build.
