What it does
While typing, users see matching completions and a description of the selected entry. inshellisense reads CLI specifications, so available suggestions depend on the command. Accepted text enters the shell line for further editing or execution. Start a session separately or at shell startup. TOML configuration controls keys, suggestion count and appearance; Bash and Zsh support alias expansion. When suggestions are hidden, keystrokes pass through to the shell. Users continue editing with their usual shell shortcuts.
Who it is for. Terminal-focused developers switching between CLI tools and choosing their options while typing.
Good fit when
- Read option descriptions while entering an unfamiliar command.
- Open new shell windows with completions already enabled.
- Keep familiar selection keys when switching from another tool.
- Complete commands entered through personal Bash or Zsh aliases.
Not a fit when
- You need supported az, gcloud or aws specifications.
- Suggestions must guarantee command safety.
- You need fully supported cmd integration rather than experimental support.
Example request
Propose inshellisense integration for Zsh, preserving existing configuration and running doctor separately.Limitations
The npm installation needs a suitable Node.js environment, followed by resource initialization and doctor checks. az, gcloud and aws specifications are unsupported because of their size, so those tools lack the expected suggestion set. Startup integration belongs at the end of shell configuration: for Zsh, append the output of is init zsh to ~/.zshrc after other plugins. Completions reflect command specifications, not permissions or execution consequences; review the final command yourself.
How to disable. Use `exit` to end the inshellisense session and remove shell startup integration if enabled.
FAQ
What checks the installation?
`is doctor` reports setup problems before automatic startup is enabled.
How do I enter a session?
Run `is` or the full `inshellisense` name.
How do I accept an entry?
Press `Tab`. To change the key, configure bindings.acceptSuggestion in ~/.inshellisenserc or ~/.config/inshellisense/rc.toml.
Are AWS, Google Cloud and Azure CLI supported?
The aws, gcloud and az specifications are unsupported because of size. Other commands depend on available specifications.
What follows an update?
Run `is reinit` to refresh resources, then start a new session. Use `exit` to leave it.

In ~/.inshellisenserc, `useAliases = true` enables Bash and Zsh alias expansion. New Unix installations store resources in the XDG data directory.
