Manual install

curl -sSfL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/ajeetdsouza/zoxide/main/install.sh | sh

First recommended Linux/WSL option. Inspect the script first; shell initialization is separate.

How we review

Extended accessThe tool runs code or makes network calls and only reads external data.

  • Shell integration changes navigation commands and retains directory-path history locally.

This is third-party code. Review the repository files before installing.

What it does

zoxide is a navigation tool that adds directory jumps based on short path fragments. Once initialized, it records visited directories and uses that history to select matching destinations. `z` accepts fragments and ordinary paths. Each shell needs its own initialization line. The additional `zi` command opens selection through separately installed fzf. Before deletion, builds or Git operations, users verify their current directory because similar project names may match several locations.

Who it is for. Terminal users repeatedly switching among the same project directories.

Good fit when

  • A developer repeatedly returns to a project with a long path.
  • A user finds a familiar directory from part of its name.
  • Several folders match a query, and a user selects one interactively.
  • After a shell change, the team retains its directory-jump workflow.

Not a fit when

  • A script must use only an exact fixed path.
  • Visited-directory history must not be retained locally.
  • You need file copying and renaming rather than navigation.

Example request

Plan zoxide initialization for my shell and explain path checks before commands without automatically editing configuration.

Limitations

The binary needs shell-specific initialization before jump commands become available. Interactive selection depends on a separately installed, compatible fzf. The history database contains visited directory paths, which matters when transferring user data. Given a partial path, zoxide can select another similarly named folder; verify the current directory before deletion, builds or Git operations, and use exact paths in scripts.

How to disable. Remove zoxide initialization from shell configuration and start a new session. Delete directory history separately if needed.

FAQ

Is the binary installation enough?

No. In the [shell-setup installation step](https://github.com/ajeetdsouza/zoxide#installation), select Bash, Zsh or your shell and add its initialization line to the shell configuration.

Why is fzf needed?

For interactive `zi` selection. Ordinary jumps do not need that mode.

Can I use an exact path?

Yes. `z` accepts ordinary paths; verify the resulting directory.

How are matches ranked?

Using directory-usage history. Choose interactively when uncertain.

Is it a file manager?

No. It changes the current directory; other commands perform file operations.
