Access and checks

How we review

Extended accessThe tool runs code or makes network calls and only reads external data.

  • The CLI reads Markdown and writes presentations; some exports launch a local browser.

This is third-party code. Review the repository files before installing.

What it does

Marp CLI converts Marp and Marpit Markdown slides into a presentation from the command line. Authors edit text, run conversion and receive a file to present or share. Watch mode rebuilds the result when Markdown or a theme changes. Server mode returns a chosen format to the browser on request. This is a rendering tool callable from scripts and CI; a separate Marp skill guides an agent’s content preparation but does not replace the installed converter. The default output is HTML.

Who it is for. Teachers and technical authors keeping slides in Markdown and rebuilding them after edits.

Good fit when

  • A speaker versions slide text beside code in Git.
  • A teacher exports PDF from the same source used for HTML presentation.
  • A team builds a presentation in CI.
  • An editor uses watch to review theme and text changes in a browser.

Not a fit when

  • The client requires editable PowerPoint shapes without an experimental export mode.
  • The environment has no browser but must export PDF or PPTX.
  • An author plans to allow local-file access for untrusted Markdown.

Example request

Build these Marp Markdown slides into HTML, then show a PDF export plan without enabling local-file access unnecessarily.

Limitations

Node-based execution requires Node.js 18 or later. PDF, PPTX and image exports need Chrome, Edge or Firefox. Ordinary PPTX contains rendered slide images; the experimental editable variant additionally requires LibreOffice and can change the appearance. Local files are blocked by default during browser conversion, and the author recommends `--allow-local-files` only for trusted Markdown whose asset access has been reviewed.

How to disable. Stop watch or server mode and remove Marp from the build. Source Markdown and generated presentations remain on disk.

FAQ

How do I try it without a persistent installation?

Run `npx @marp-team/marp-cli@latest slide-deck.md` with your Markdown file. It produces HTML without a persistent package installation and requires Node.js 18 or later.

How do I install it in a project?

The author recommends `npm install --save-dev @marp-team/marp-cli` to control the version. Use npm scripts or `npx marp` after installation.

How do I export PDF?

Use `npx @marp-team/marp-cli@latest slide-deck.md --pdf`. Install a compatible browser and substitute your input filename.

Is PPTX editable?

Ordinary slides are rendered images. `marp --pptx --pptx-editable slide-deck.md` supports experimental object editing; review layout and note that presenter notes are unsupported.

How do changes trigger a rebuild?

`npx @marp-team/marp-cli@latest -w slide-deck.md` enables watch mode. Keep it running and open HTML; saving Markdown triggers a rebuild.

README in short

Themes style the Markdown slides, while presenter notes remain part of the source. Sharing formats include HTML, PDF and ordinary PPTX. Experimental editable PPTX has separate limitations, including no presenter notes.
