What it does
Streamdown renders Markdown as text arrives in the terminal. It formats headings, tables, code and links without taking over the screen with a full-screen interface. Users pass files, pipe a stream or wrap another program. Wrapper mode preserves keyboard interaction with the application. Colors, width and code styling are configured in TOML, with optional images and saved code blocks for reuse.
Who it is for. Terminal AI users reading streamed answers containing tables and long code blocks.
Good fit when
- A model streams Markdown that should be readable immediately.
- A document needs viewing from a file without a browser.
- An interactive chat must retain familiar keyboard input.
- CJK documents need readable table wrapping.
Not a fit when
- You need a video or media-stream downloader.
- The terminal lacks required image or clipboard support.
- Raw output must remain unchanged without formatting or extra files.

Features depend on the terminal and operating system; test images, links and clipboard behavior locally. Remote images may be fetched by default, so disable Network when outbound requests are prohibited. With Clipboard enabled, the program copies the final code block on exit; this is the default. Savebrace is also on by default: the program stores code blocks in a temporary directory; disable that setting or manage the copies under project rules.
How to disable. Exit Streamdown and run the original program directly. Inspect saved code blocks and temporary logs separately.
FAQ
Where is the configuration file?
Run `sd -h`; help shows the path for your platform.
How do I preserve copied code lines?
Disable `PrettyBroken` and `PrettyPad` in style settings.
How do I wrap an interactive chat?
For example, run `sd --exec "llm chat"` to wrap `llm chat`. You can continue typing messages with the keyboard.
Why is the input prompt detected incorrectly?
Set `--prompt` to a pattern matching your application’s prompt.
Can I get plain text only?
Yes. `--strip` removes Markdown formatting from output.
