What it does
WordOps is a web-server CLI that creates sites through `wo`. Administrators specify a domain and site type: WordPress, PHP, static pages or a reverse proxy. WordPress sites can use a selected cache, and domains can receive TLS certificates. When creating a site, WordOps installs required packages and configures the web stack, including Nginx and PHP. It also includes server status and monitoring utilities. These operations change system services and can affect other applications on a shared host. Before installation, back up sites, databases and server configuration.
Who it is for. Administrators of dedicated WordPress servers provisioning sites and maintaining the web stack from a CLI.
Good fit when
- An administrator deploys a WordPress site on a prepared server.
- A domain gets selected caching and a TLS certificate.
- Sites receive PHP versions suited to their application requirements.
- An application on a local port is published through a reverse proxy.
Not a fit when
- A shared server cannot accept web-stack or package changes.
- The OS is outside the supported list without testing.
- Live sites have no backup or recovery access.
Example request
Plan WordPress provisioning on a new server with WordOps, checking OS, domain and backups before execution.Limitations
Installation and stack management require administrative permissions and can affect live sites on the host. Supported Ubuntu and Debian versions are listed separately; Raspbian is marked for testing only. The installer is downloaded externally and run with elevated permissions, so inspect it beforehand. Test PHP, cache and Nginx changes on a site copy: a successful command does not establish compatibility with the application and its plugins.
How to disable. Stop issuing WordOps commands. Decommission the installed stack using a site-migration and backup plan.
FAQ
How do I create a basic WordPress site?
The README example is `sudo wo site create example.com --wp`. Replace example.com with your domain and run it on the prepared server. It installs required packages and configures WordPress without page caching.
How do I choose another site type?
For static pages, use the documented example `wo site create example.com --html`. The `--php` flag selects a PHP site, while `--proxy=127.0.0.1:3000` configures a reverse proxy to the application on that local port. Substitute your domain and application address.
How do I change PHP for an existing site?
The README’s PHP-switching section lists `wo site update example.com --php84` for PHP 8.4. Substitute your domain and choose a version supported by the application and its plugins. Test the switch on a site copy first.
How do I choose a cache for a new WordPress site?
`wo site create example.com --wpfc` creates a site with Nginx FastCGI caching. `wo site create example.com --wpredis` uses Redis. These are alternatives for a new site; choose one for your application.
How do I request a Let’s Encrypt certificate?
The README uses `wo site create example.com --wp -le` for a new WordPress site with a certificate. Substitute your domain. Wildcard certificates need the separate DNS API option in the [certificate section](https://github.com/WordOps/WordOps#sites-secured-with-lets-encrypt).
