What it does
Copilot MCP is a VS Code extension that brings searching, installing and tracking MCP servers and skills into one sidebar. The MCP Servers icon in the activity bar opens the server list. You connect a found server from the list and configure your own through the interface or VS Code settings. The tools of connected servers become available to the agents. The Skills tab searches the skills.sh catalog and installs skills for the agents you choose. The same tab lists installed skills, and you can remove any of them from one agent without touching the others. The Server Discovery panel finds open-source MCP servers. In Copilot chat the @mcp mention runs a search over servers.
Who it is for. For VS Code developers who connect MCP servers and skills to several agents and want to do it through an interface.
Good fit when
- You need to find an MCP server by topic and connect it to Copilot from a list
- Several agents need the same skill at once
- You want to see which skills each agent has and remove the extra ones
- You prefer to search for servers right from Copilot chat through @mcp
Not a fit when
- You work outside VS Code or without the GitHub Copilot Chat extension
- The install must be reproducible from a config file in the repository: the extension works through its interface
- You need one server you already know: adding it to the agent config by hand is faster
Example request
Find a PostgreSQL server in the MCP Servers panel, connect it to Copilot and show which tools it addedLimitations
- The extension works only in VS Code and requires GitHub Copilot Chat.
- The license is GPL-3.0: its terms apply if you embed the extension code into a closed product.
- The extension sends anonymous usage events to the author. They include search terms (truncated to 100 characters), public names of the repositories and skills you worked with, platform, version and truncated error text. File contents and account identifiers are not included. The extension follows the VS Code `telemetry.telemetryLevel` setting.
- For servers that run through npx or uvx, the Server Discovery panel shows a Deploy via Cloud MCP button. It runs the server on the extension author's cloud service, so that server's data passes through the author's infrastructure. Local runs stay available.
How to disable. Disable or uninstall the Copilot MCP extension in the VS Code extension list. Servers and skills it already installed for agents stay: remove servers in each agent's settings, and skills in the Skills tab before uninstalling the extension.
