- The bot token opens control of the server and must be kept in an environment variable, and the bot's reach should be limited with allowlists
Install
- Works in

What it does
Discord MCP connects Claude, Codex, Cursor and other MCP clients to your own Discord bot. The bot is added to a server you control and the token stays with you. Through the tools the agent works with messages, threads, forums, roles, events, polls and onboarding, checks permissions, audits roles, bans and configures AutoMod. The description names 222 tools, while the repository summary says 209. For building a server from a prompt there is a blueprint: the agent drafts a plan, you review and approve it, then execution runs with the ability to resume and ends with a readback of the result in Discord. There is also editing of an existing server with a preview of bounded changes, reading a conversation with Discord citations, and durable background workflows with cancel and resume. Bots can be extended with slash commands, interactions, webhooks and application emojis. Install goes through the `@discord-mcp/cli` command line tool. The `setup`, `doctor` and `smoke` commands create a profile, verify the connection and run a trial that changes nothing in Discord. It works over stdio, and a bearer-protected Streamable HTTP endpoint exists for self-hosting.
Who it is for. For Discord community owners and moderators who want an agent in Claude, Codex or Cursor to handle server setup, moderation and conversation review.
Good fit when
- You want to build a gaming community from scratch: channels, roles, onboarding and AutoMod from a brief, with a plan to approve and a final check
- You need to audit roles and permissions on an existing server and preview changes before applying them
- You need to read a long thread or channel and get a summary with citations and an explicit note of how much of the conversation is covered
- You need slash commands, webhooks or emojis for your own bot
- You want to start in a safe preview mode where writes are blocked and enable changes later
Not a fit when
- You need a simple server for sending messages and reading channels: the compact mcp-discord or Discord MCP by SaseQ is enough
- You do not have Node.js 22.12 or newer
- You have no bot of your own and no server to install it on: the server works only through a bot you create yourself
- Discord is unreachable from your network: the server depends on access to Discord

Environment variables
DISCORD_TOKENrequired, secret- Your Discord bot token in the form Bot TOKEN.
MCP_WRITE_MODE- The value preview blocks all mutations. The setup wizard enables it by default.
Limitations
It needs Node.js 22.12 or newer and your own Discord bot installed on a server you control. The bot token is passed in the `DISCORD_TOKEN` environment variable and should not be kept in client config files. Discord is blocked in Russia.
The project is pre-1.0; see the releases and the v1.0 readiness document for stability commitments. The `setup` wizard defaults to `MCP_WRITE_MODE=preview`, which blocks all mutations, while a direct `serve` allows ordinary writes by default. `MCP_DRY_RUN` covers only confirmation-gated tools. The Docker image defaults to catalog-only mode, and working with a bot needs the `serve` command and your own credentials. The license is Apache-2.0.
How to disable. Remove the discord-mcp block from the client config and restart it, then revoke the bot token in the Discord Developer Portal or remove the bot from the server. The global package is removed with npm uninstall -g @discord-mcp/cli.
FAQ
Is there a Discord MCP for Claude and Codex?
Yes, Discord MCP by cappyeo connects Claude, Codex, Cursor and other MCP clients to your bot. The command `discord-mcp setup --profile devbot --client codex` creates a profile and a ready config, which you apply in the client yourself.
How do I install Discord MCP?
Run npm install -g @discord-mcp/cli, set the bot token in the DISCORD_TOKEN variable in the form Bot TOKEN and run discord-mcp setup. Then verify with discord-mcp doctor --online and discord-mcp smoke. The smoke check changes nothing in Discord.
Is the Discord server protected from accidental changes?
The setup wizard enables MCP_WRITE_MODE=preview, which blocks writes. Allowlists of servers and tool categories limit access. A direct serve without setup allows ordinary changes, so set the mode explicitly.
Can I check the tool catalog without a bot token?
Yes. discord-mcp catalog --check validates the local tool catalog with no token, no network request and no write to Discord. It does not confirm a live connection.
How does Discord MCP by cappyeo differ from mcp-discord?
The cappyeo server has over two hundred tools, server blueprints with plan approval, editing of an existing server, conversation reading with citations and background workflows. mcp-discord is simpler: bot login, messages, channels, forums, roles and webhooks, started with one npx command.

README in short
The description presents the project as an open-source MCP server for Discord with a demo: an 87-second video in which an agent builds a gaming community. A table maps tasks to capabilities: running a community, moderation, plan-based builds, extending a bot, improving an existing server, reading conversations and background workflows. Sections on safety and local operation follow, then a documentation table and a note that the project is pre-1.0.
