How we review

Extended accessThe tool runs code or makes network calls and only reads external data.

  • Scrapes public Reddit data through unofficial endpoints and may breach the platform's terms
  • Returns user profile data, so the result must not be used for tracking people

This is third-party code. Review the repository files before installing.

What it does

The server gives the agent six tools for reading public Reddit. search finds posts across all of Reddit, search_subreddit works inside one subreddit, get_post returns a post with its comment tree, get_subreddit_posts pages through hot, top, new and rising feeds with a time filter, and get_user and get_user_posts show a user's public activity and posts. Each tool returns a JSON object that matches its advertised schema, so responses validate in bridges such as mcpo and Open WebUI. By default the server calls the same JSON endpoints on www.reddit.com that a browser uses, with no keys and no browser. If Reddit blocks such requests and answers with a 403 error, set REDDIT_CLIENT_ID and REDDIT_CLIENT_SECRET of a script-type app: the server then obtains a token through client_credentials, refreshes it itself and reads public data only, with no account login.

Who it is for. Marketers, market researchers and developers who want an agent to monitor Reddit discussions without registering an app.

Good fit when

  • Before a product launch you want to see what several subreddits say about a topic
  • A hundred-comment thread is easier for an agent to digest than to read yourself
  • Comparing tools calls for the month's top posts from r/MachineLearning
  • A specific user's public posts matter for research
  • Setup through uvx should take a minute, with no OAuth app

Not a fit when

  • You need to publish posts, comment or vote: the server only reads
  • Private communities and direct messages are required, only public data is available
  • The network blocks anonymous Reddit requests and you cannot create a script app

Environment variables

REDDIT_CLIENT_ID
Client ID of a script-type Reddit app, enables the official OAuth API.
REDDIT_CLIENT_SECRET secret
Reddit app secret, required together with REDDIT_CLIENT_ID.
REDDIT_PROXY
HTTP or HTTPS proxy URL for requests.

Limitations

The server only reads public data. Reddit blocks anonymous requests on many networks, in which case every tool answers with a 403 error and you must create a script-type app on the prefs/apps page and set a key pair. There are pauses of 1 to 2 seconds between paginated requests, set by REDDIT_THROTTLE_MIN and REDDIT_THROTTLE_MAX. A proxy can be configured through REDDIT_PROXY. Scraping falls under Reddit's rules, so respect the platform's terms and do not collect personal data for tracking.

How to disable. Remove the reddit entry from the client's MCP config. A package run through uvx needs no separate cleanup.

FAQ

How do I connect Reddit MCP Server to Claude Desktop?

Add a reddit server to `claude_desktop_config.json` with the `uvx` command and the `reddit-no-auth-mcp-server` argument, then restart Claude Desktop. The same block fits `.cursor/mcp.json` in Cursor.

Is a Reddit API key needed?

No, by default the server reads Reddit's public JSON endpoints. The script-app keys are needed only when Reddit blocks anonymous requests and a 403 error arrives.

Can the server publish posts and comments?

No, the six tools are read-only: search, subreddit feeds, a post with comments, and user activity and posts.

How do I run it over HTTP?

Run `uvx reddit-no-auth-mcp-server --transport streamable-http --port 8000`. By default it serves the /mcp path on 127.0.0.1.

Which sort options does search have?

search accepts relevance, hot, top, new and comments, and subreddit feeds take the hot, top, new and rising categories with a period from an hour to all time.

README in short

The README describes a Python MCP server for reading Reddit with a table of six tools and argument examples. Installation goes through uvx or from source, with Claude Desktop and Cursor configs. Environment variables, the client_credentials OAuth mode and the project architecture are documented separately. MIT licence.
