What it does
Reddit MCP Server connects an agent to posts, comments and community information. Existing OAuth credentials enable Reddit API access; without keys it uses available RSS feeds and the Arctic Shift archive. Archive results identify their source. User credentials enable creating, editing and deleting account content. Rate and duplicate checks support compliant posting, while the account owner should decide what gets published.
Who it is for. Reddit community researchers who need source-attributed discussions with clear freshness limits.
Good fit when
- Before interviews, you gather questions and answers from a specific community.
- For a discovered post, you need the comment thread to understand context.
- Without an API key, you can use dated archive material for the research task.
- As an account owner, you want to prepare a reply and inspect community rules before posting.
Not a fit when
- A report requires current engagement metrics from an archive without lag.
- You need private saved items without OAuth access.
- An automation should publish without account-owner review.

Environment variables
REDDIT_CLIENT_ID- Existing Reddit application ID.
REDDIT_CLIENT_SECRETsecret- Reddit application secret.
REDDIT_USERNAMEsecret- Username for account operations.
REDDIT_PASSWORDsecret- User password for write operations.
Limitations
Arctic Shift is a third-party Reddit archive: scores and comment counts can lag, and recent replies may be missing. Since October 31, 2026, Reddit no longer accepts new public API access requests; use keyless reads if you lack active access. RSS retirement is scheduled for November 13, 2026, so ranked listings may fall back to newest archive records. Write operations require existing OAuth access and user credentials.
How to disable. Remove the Reddit extension or MCP connection and revoke supplied credentials. Previously published content remains on Reddit.
FAQ
Can I start without keys?
Yes. Most read operations use the archive and available RSS feeds. Check each result’s source note.
Why is popularity ranking missing?
The archive fallback returns recent records. When RSS is unavailable, the server reports missing ranking; do not label that list a top ranking.
How do I check the connection?
Call `test_reddit_mcp_server` and inspect its configuration result before starting research.
Why does keyless search require a community?
Archive post search requires a specific subreddit. Supply its name and retry.
Is a password needed for public posts?
No. Username and password enable account and write operations. Avoid supplying them for public research unless needed.
