What it does
MCP Server Reddit is a small Python server that lets an agent read Reddit. It runs on top of the redditwarp library and calls the public API, so no app registration or keys are needed. There are eight tools. `get_frontpage_posts` returns hot posts from the front page and `get_subreddit_info` returns subreddit details. Subreddit posts come from `get_subreddit_hot_posts`, `get_subreddit_new_posts`, `get_subreddit_top_posts` (with an `hour`, `day`, `week`, `month`, `year` or `all` filter) and `get_subreddit_rising_posts`. `get_post_content` returns a post with its comment tree, where you set the number of top-level comments and the branch depth, and `get_post_comments` returns a flat list of comments. Every list defaults to 10 items, with a maximum of 100. The server runs over stdio with `uvx mcp-server-reddit`, so it needs no separate install.
Who it is for. Marketers, market researchers and developers who ask an agent to summarize Reddit discussions: what a subreddit posts, what tops it and what the comments argue about.
Good fit when
- Before a product launch you want to see what is hot in `r/ClaudeAI` today and what users complain about
- A long comment thread is condensed into a list of arguments for and against
- The best posts of a subreddit for a month or a year are gathered for a review
- Rising posts in a subreddit show a topic before it reaches the top
- A post link becomes a short summary with its top-level comments
Not a fit when
- The agent must post, comment or vote: all eight tools only read
- You need search across all of Reddit or user profile reads: those tools are not in the list
- You want frequent crawling of a large volume: the server uses the public API with no dedicated quota
- You want to act as your own Reddit account: sign-in and keys are not part of the project
Example request
Show the ten top posts of r/ClaudeAI this week and briefly summarize the main arguments in the commentsMCP
- Transport
- stdio
- Authentication
- not required
Limitations
- All tools only read. There is no search, posting, voting or profile reading.
- The server uses the public API through redditwarp without a key, so Reddit's rate limits fall on you in full.
- Each list takes 1 to 100 items and comment depth is 1 to 10.
- The last commit in the repository dates from June 2026. Post and comment texts come from strangers and enter the model's context as is.
How to disable. Delete the `reddit` entry from your MCP client config, for example with `claude mcp remove reddit`. If you installed with pip, remove the package with `pip uninstall mcp-server-reddit`.
FAQ
How do I connect MCP Server Reddit to Claude Desktop?
Add a `reddit` server to `claude_desktop_config.json` with the command `uvx` and the argument `mcp-server-reddit`. If you installed through pip, use `python` with `-m mcp_server_reddit` instead. Smithery install: `npx -y @smithery/cli install @Hawstein/mcp-server-reddit --client claude`.
Do I need a Reddit account or key?
No. The server uses Reddit's public API through redditwarp, and the README lists no environment variables.
Which tool gives the top posts for a period?
`get_subreddit_top_posts` with the `time` parameter: `hour`, `day`, `week`, `month`, `year` and `all` are valid. Without it the filter is empty.
How can I try the server before connecting it?
Run `npx @modelcontextprotocol/inspector uvx mcp-server-reddit`: the MCP inspector lists the tools and lets you call each one by hand.
Does the server work with Zed?
Yes, the README has a Zed setup. Add `context_servers` to `settings.json` with the command `uvx` and the argument `mcp-server-reddit`.

README in short
The page briefly explains the server's purpose and links a Clinde demo. It then lists the eight tools with their arguments, install routes (Clinde, uv, pip, Smithery), configuration for Claude and Zed, example questions and debugging through the MCP inspector.
