What it does
MailCheap is an email newsletter app with open source code. You write an issue in the editor or send it through the API and MCP as Markdown or a complete HTML email, review it before sending and send it at once, on a schedule or to the most engaged readers first. Each newsletter gets a website with an issue archive, a signup form and an author page. You can self-host it on Vercel with MongoDB and your own Amazon SES or PostShiba account. A cloud version at mailcheap.ai runs the same code. The MCP server mirrors the dashboard: every action is a tool with the same checks and limits. Claude Code, Codex and Cursor connect with an API key, while ChatGPT, Claude and Grok Bot add the server as a connector and sign in with OAuth. The app also protects deliverability: emails first go to a small slice of the list, inactive readers get one "do you still want this" email, and sending pauses when complaint or bounce rates are high. Import accepts exports from eight newsletter services.
Who it is for. For newsletter authors and marketers who want to run issues with Claude Code, Codex or Cursor and pay for emails sent with no charge for dormant subscribers.
Good fit when
- You want an agent to write an issue, run checks on the subject, unsubscribe link and email size and show you the result before sending
- You are moving from beehiiv, Substack or Mailchimp and want to import a CSV export with each reader status and signup date
- You want to run your own newsletter platform on Amazon SES and pay the sending price with no service subscription
- You need a newsletter website with an issue archive, a signup form and a sitemap for search engines in one app
Not a fit when
- You need support for self-hosting: a self-run instance gets none, and setup questions go unanswered
- You need a Russian newsletter service that sends through a Russian provider: the app sends through Amazon SES or PostShiba
- You want mailings without subscriber consent: confirmed opt-in is on by default and every email carries an unsubscribe link
- You want a package the agent installs locally: the MCP server runs on your server or in MailCheap Cloud

Environment variables
MAILCHEAP_API_KEYrequired, secret- A full access API key from the API keys page, sent in the Authorization header
Limitations
- The cloud version needs a subscription; a self-run install needs Node.js 22 or newer, MongoDB and an Amazon SES or PostShiba account. Setup takes about an hour, most of it waiting for DNS and for the provider to approve sending.
- A website signup form gets its own key that opens no other actions.
- ChatGPT, Claude and Grok Bot connect through OAuth and need an HTTPS address reachable from the internet.
- The app has limits: up to 3 newsletters per account and 300 requests a minute per key.
- Issues are turned off and pull requests may not be reviewed.
- The license is AGPL-3.0: if you run modified code as a network service you must publish the source.
How to disable. Remove the server from the client settings (in Claude Code by removing the MCP server) and revoke the key on the API keys page. Apps connected through OAuth are revoked on the same page.
FAQ
How do I connect MailCheap to Claude Code?
Create a full access key on the API keys page and run `claude mcp add --transport http --scope user mailcheap https://mailcheap.ai/mcp --header "Authorization: Bearer $MAILCHEAP_API_KEY"`.
How do I connect MailCheap to ChatGPT or Claude?
Add https://mailcheap.ai/mcp as a connector or custom MCP server and sign in to MailCheap with OAuth. On the consent page you allow the app access to the account. The connected apps list and access revocation are on the API keys page.
What can an agent do through the MailCheap MCP?
Write and edit issues, review them, add contacts, check stats and domains. Sending is marked irreversible, so the agent should get your confirmation.
How much does MailCheap cost and can I self-host?
The cloud version starts at 19 dollars a month for 20,000 emails. A self-run instance is free and you pay only the sending provider: on Amazon SES that is 0.10 to 0.16 dollars per thousand emails.
Where can I import subscribers from?
From CSV exports of beehiiv, Substack and Mailchimp, plus Kit, MailerLite, Buttondown, Ghost and EmailOctopus. Each reader status and signup date is kept, while invalid addresses, spam traps and unsubscribed people are dropped on import.

README in short
The core idea: one app covers the whole newsletter path, from an issue written by an agent to sending from your own domain. A separate table compares the cloud version with a self-run install.
