Nextcloud MCP Server
Connects an agent to Nextcloud: notes, calendar, contacts, files, mail and Deck boards through more than 110 MCP tools

Broad access
Why this level
- The agent reads, changes and deletes files, notes and events and sends mail from the connected mailbox
- An app password opens all data in the Nextcloud account, so issue a separate one for the server and revoke it when you are done
Install
- Works in
In your terminal, with SkillFoxx CLI
npx skillfoxx add mcp/nextcloud-mcp-serverDetects the agents on your machine, shows the access level and pins the version.

What it does
Nextcloud MCP Server links Claude Code, Claude Desktop and other MCP clients to your Nextcloud instance. The agent handles plain-language requests: it creates notes, edits calendar events, looks up contacts, reads and writes files over WebDAV and moves cards between columns on Deck boards. The server runs apart from Nextcloud: locally through uvx, in Docker, on a virtual machine or in Kubernetes. It has more than 110 tools covering notes, the calendar with tasks and recurring events, contacts over CardDAV, files, Deck, the Cookbook recipe app, Tables, sharing, the News feed reader, Talk, collectives and the shopping list. For mail it reads mailboxes and messages, sends, saves drafts, sets flags and tags and moves messages. Experimental semantic search finds notes, files, news items, Deck cards and mail by meaning, so a query about a car also surfaces entries about transport. It is off by default and needs the Qdrant vector database and an embedding service such as Ollama. The server also extracts text from PDF, DOCX and images with OCR.
Who it is for. For people who keep their working data in their own Nextcloud and want to manage notes, calendar, files and mail from Claude Code or another MCP environment.
Good fit when
- You want the agent to add a note or a calendar event in Nextcloud without opening the web interface
- Tasks live on Deck boards and the agent should create cards, set labels and assign people
- Nextcloud holds a working archive of PDFs and documents and you need to search it by meaning or pull text out with OCR
- You import recipes from a link into Cookbook or fill the shopping list with whole recipes
- Several people share the server: Login Flow v2 mode issues each user an app password of their own
Not a fit when
- You want AI inside Nextcloud itself: the server targets external clients, and for the built-in Assistant the author points to the Astrolabe app
- You have no Nextcloud: the server does not work with other clouds or file storages
- You would rather not run Qdrant and an embedding service: semantic search stays off without them and only keyword search remains
- You want to connect to Nextcloud directly over OAuth: the author removed that mode, and multi-user setups use Login Flow v2

Environment variables
NEXTCLOUD_HOSTrequired- Address of your Nextcloud instance
NEXTCLOUD_USERNAMErequired- Nextcloud user name
NEXTCLOUD_PASSWORDrequired, secret- App password created in the Nextcloud security settings
ENABLE_SEMANTIC_SEARCH- Turns on experimental semantic search, false by default
EXCLUDED_TAGS- A Nextcloud system tag whose files are hidden from the file tools
Limitations
The server connects to Nextcloud with an app password, created under the security settings on the devices and sessions page. Do not use the account password for this. The mode that passes OAuth straight to Nextcloud was dropped from the project because it needed patches to user_oidc that were never merged.
Semantic search is marked experimental. The variable ENABLE_SEMANTIC_SEARCH=false keeps it off, and it needs a separate vector database and an embedding service. For reordering results the docs describe Infinity, vLLM and Cohere.
The license is AGPL-3.0: if you change the code and offer the server to others over a network, you have to publish your changes. The server talks only to your own Nextcloud instance, so availability from Russia depends on where that instance is installed.
How to disable. Remove the nextcloud block from the MCP client configuration and restart the client. For Docker, stop the container. To cut access completely, delete the app password in Nextcloud on the devices and sessions page.
FAQ
How do I connect Nextcloud to Claude Code?
Start the server with uvx nextcloud-mcp-server run --transport stdio and the variables NEXTCLOUD_HOST, NEXTCLOUD_USERNAME and NEXTCLOUD_PASSWORD. The same block with the uvx command and arguments can go into an MCP client configuration such as claude_desktop_config.json.
Which password do I give for Nextcloud?
An app password. You create it in Nextcloud under the security settings on the devices and sessions page, it is revoked separately and does not expose your main password.
How do I run the server in Docker and connect a client?
The image ghcr.io/cbcoutinho/nextcloud-mcp-server starts with the same environment variables and port 8000. Clients connect to http://127.0.0.1:8000/mcp. For the full feature set including semantic search the author recommends Docker.
Which Nextcloud apps does the server support?
Notes, calendar, contacts, files over WebDAV, Deck, Cookbook, Tables, sharing, News, mail, collectives, Talk and the shopping list. Each app has its own set of tools, and the calendar alone has more than twenty.
How do I hide some files from the agent?
Tag the files or folders with a Nextcloud system tag and put its name in the EXCLUDED_TAGS variable. The MCP file tools then stop showing them.

README in short
The README separates three sign-in modes: a single user with an app password, several users passing credentials in a header, and Login Flow v2, where clients sign in to the MCP server over OAuth and the server obtains the app password itself. A separate section explains how to link the server with Nextcloud Assistant through the Astrolabe app. The author also builds Astrolabe Cloud, a hosting service that is still in development.
