What it does
rvt-mcp connects an MCP client to a running Autodesk Revit. A .NET 8 server talks to the client over stdio, and a thin add-in for each release year from 2022 to 2027 runs inside Revit. Up to and including 2024 the link uses local TCP; from 2025 it uses a named pipe. Data never leaves the machine, and lengths at the tool boundary are in millimetres. The agent gets typed tools for everyday model work. These are queries on views, selection, parameters and relationships, creating grids, levels, rooms and elements, sheets and viewports, schedules, families, annotations, materials, geometry and exports to PDF, DWG, IFC and NWC. For everything else there is an entry point for C# code. Family Editor authoring is outside the project's scope for now. A fresh install enables all 233 tools. A bare rvt-mcp.exe with no settings exposes 46 tools from the query, create, view and meta sets. You can narrow the set, and tools marked read-only are filtered separately. There is also ToolBaker, which turns repeated actions into your own personal tools.
Who it is for. For BIM specialists and developers on Windows who want to drive a Revit model through Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Codex or Cursor.
Good fit when

Not a fit when
- You are not on Windows: the installer and add-ins are built for Windows and full desktop Revit
- You need to edit families in the Family Editor: this scenario is not supported yet
- You need Revit Viewer: it is not a supported target
- The model must not be touched: the set includes delete by id and arbitrary C# code, so do not run it without a separate copy of the file

Limitations
Windows only and full desktop Revit. Test depth varies by year: CI builds all six add-ins, but it is worth re-checking the versions you use. The server binds to exactly one Revit instance; with several windows you pick the target by hand through revit_list_available_targets and revit_switch_target. To work, start MCP on the Revit ribbon (Add-Ins, RvtMcp). The installer edits client configs, so preview with -WhatIf before applying. The license is Apache-2.0.
How to disable. Close Revit and your clients, then run uninstall.ps1 -Yes: it removes the add-ins and the server and keeps personal data unless you add -Purge. Client config entries are removed with install.ps1 -Uninstall -Client auto.

How do I install Bimwright's Revit MCP in Claude Desktop?
Close Revit and Claude Desktop, download the RvtMcp.Setup archive from the latest release and run install.ps1 with -Client claude-desktop. For Claude Code use -Client claude. You can run it with -WhatIf first.
Which Revit versions does this Revit MCP support?
Revit 2022–2027. 2022–2024 use .NET Framework 4.8 and TCP, 2025–2026 use .NET 8 and a named pipe, 2027 uses .NET 10. Revit Viewer is not supported.
How many tools does rvt-mcp have?
After install there are 233; a bare rvt-mcp.exe exposes 46. With adaptive ToolBaker mode three more suggestion tools are added.
What if several Revit windows are open?
Call revit_list_available_targets, pick the instance by PID or window title and pin it with revit_switch_target using a selector like pid:12345.
