What it does
Awesome Statusline puts one line or a block of up to five lines under the Claude Code prompt: current model, reasoning effort (`low`, `medium`, `high`, `xhigh`, `max`), an extended-thinking marker, the active output style, folder and git branch with counts of uncommitted files, context window usage and session time. Usage limits get their own display. On Pro and Max that is the 5-hour and weekly windows with reset times; on Ultra a single weekly bar with a per-day budget. The plan is detected automatically, so changing plans needs no reinstall. There are 15 presets: five sizes from `xsmall` to `xlarge` in three styles (emoji, no emoji, plain text). Colors follow the Catppuccin palette. The script is small and local, and needs neither Node nor a Nerd Font. The installer writes `statusLine` into `~/.claude/settings.json` and makes a backup first. A beta mods mode shows the same band above the prompt in the Claude desktop app on macOS and Linux.
Who it is for. Claude Code subscribers who want to see remaining limits and context usage without opening the `/usage` command.
Good fit when
- The weekly Pro or Max limit drains faster than expected and you want a constant usage gauge
- The context window fills up unnoticed and you want to see it before auto-compaction
- You need a statusline that works the same on macOS, Linux and Windows without Node
- Your terminal inside tmux or SSH garbles emoji and the `-plain` or `-simple` preset fits
- You want to see which reasoning effort the current model runs with
Not a fit when
- You sign in with an API key: the limit bars stay at `loading..` because the data arrives only with a claude.ai subscription login
- You want hundreds of options and custom widgets: this ships ready-made presets, not a builder
- Company policy forbids running an installer from the internet in one line and you will not review the script by hand
- You need the mod in the Windows desktop app: mods mode is described for macOS and Linux
Example request
Install https://github.com/awesomezun/claude-statusline with the large-plain preset.Limitations
Limit data arrives after the first message of a session; until then it shows `loading..`, and with an API key login it never arrives. The reasoning-effort field is hidden on models that do not support it.
On macOS and Linux the script needs `jq`; the installer adds it with brew, apt, dnf, pacman, zypper or apk when it is missing. On Windows a native PowerShell script is used, with no `jq` or Git Bash. Inside tmux Claude Code drops to 256 colors, so set `CLAUDE_CODE_TMUX_TRUECOLOR` in settings for the full gradient. Mods mode and the `/cockpit` pane are still beta, and `/cockpit` is called a prototype.
How to disable. Remove the `statusLine` entry from `~/.claude/settings.json` and delete `~/.claude/awesome-statusline.sh` (`awesome-statusline.ps1` on Windows). Every install leaves a `settings.json.backup-<timestamp>` next to it that restores the previous settings.
FAQ
How do I install Awesome Statusline in Claude Code?
The easiest way is to tell the agent "Install https://github.com/awesomezun/claude-statusline": it asks for a size and style and installs. The marketplace route also works: `/plugin marketplace add awesomezun/claude-statusline`, then `/plugin install awesome-statusline` and `/statusline-setup`.
Why do the limit lines say loading?
Limit data arrives after the first message of a session. If the label stays, check how you sign in: with an API key limits never arrive and a claude.ai subscription is required.
What shows on the Ultra plan?
Ultra has no 5-hour limit, so one weekly bar with a per-day budget replaces the two bars. Nothing to choose: the plan is detected from Claude Code data.
How do I switch the preset?
Name the new preset to the agent, for example "Switch https://github.com/awesomezun/claude-statusline to medium-simple", or run the installer again with the preset: `install.sh medium-simple`.
Does it slow Claude Code down?
No: it is a small local script and one refresh takes around 0.1 second. It reads data that Claude Code supplies itself.
