How we reviewExtended accessThe tool runs code or makes network calls and only reads external data.

This is third-party code. Review the repository files before installing.
What it does
claude-pace prints the model, effort level, project with branch and a git diff summary in the Claude Code status line, and on a second line the quota use in the 5-hour and 7-day windows with time to reset. Its point is the pace. A red `⇡15%` means the quota is draining 15% faster than a sustainable rate, and a green `⇣15%` means 15% of headroom. A raw usage percentage says little without the window timing: 60% half an hour before reset and 60% four hours before it call for different decisions. The whole tool is one Bash file that depends only on `jq`. Quota data arrives in the `rate_limits` field of the input JSON that Claude Code passes to the status line from version 2.1.80. The script makes no network requests. If the field is missing the quota shows `--` and no stale cached value is printed. The git branch cache lives five seconds in a private directory with mode 700. You install it as a plugin with `/plugin marketplace add`, with `npx claude-pace`, or by hand: download the script from the release to `~/.claude/statusline.sh` and add a `statusLine` block to `~/.claude/settings.json`. The `/claude-pace:setup` command copies the script shipped with the plugin, so the version you run matches the version you installed.
Who it is for. People working in Claude Code on a subscription who want to see 5-hour and 7-day quota use right in the terminal.
Good fit when
- The 5-hour window runs out unexpectedly and you want to see the burn rate ahead of time
- The working week heads for the weekly limit and you must decide whether to slow down
- You want a status line without Node.js and a node_modules folder: Bash and `jq` are enough
- You want to read the whole script before installing: it is a single file in the repository
- The status line should show the branch, diff size and model on one compact line
Not a fit when
- You want themes, powerline styling or TUI configuration: the authors point to ccstatusline for that
- Claude Code is older than 2.1.80: the quota field is not passed and you will see `--` in place of percentages
- You work through a provider that does not supply `rate_limits`: the quota shows dashes
- You need cost and token reports from logs after the fact: the tool shows only the live window state
Example request
Install claude-pace as the Claude Code status line, check that jq is installed and show me how to read the pace markersLimitations
- Claude Code 2.1.80 or newer is required, because the `rate_limits` field in the status line input first appeared in that version.
- `jq` has to be installed. Without it the script will not run.
- When `rate_limits` is absent, for example with some providers, the quota shows as `--`. The tool does not show earlier values from a cache: the author removed that fallback so stale numbers are never printed.
- Only the Claude Code status line is supported. The layout is fixed.
How to disable. Remove the `statusLine` block from `~/.claude/settings.json`. The plugin comes off with `/plugin uninstall claude-pace`, and a script installed by hand can be deleted: `~/.claude/statusline.sh`.
FAQ
How do I install claude-pace in Claude Code?
Run `/plugin marketplace add Astro-Han/claude-pace`, then `/plugin install claude-pace`, `/reload-plugins` and `/claude-pace:setup`. The fallback is `npx claude-pace`. Restart Claude Code after either route.
What do the ⇡ and ⇣ markers in the status line mean?
A red up arrow shows you burn the quota faster than a sustainable pace, and a green down arrow shows headroom. The number beside it is the percentage gap between actual use and the share of the window that has elapsed.
Does claude-pace make network requests?
No. Quota data comes from `rate_limits` in the input JSON, and the script gathers the rest with git commands and a five-second local cache.
Does claude-pace need Node.js?
No, only `jq`. The `npx claude-pace` command merely runs the installer, and the status line itself runs on Bash.
Why does the quota show `--`?
Claude Code did not pass the `rate_limits` field: the version is older than 2.1.80 or the provider does not supply it. The tool never fills in stale values.
