How we review

Extended accessThe tool runs code or makes network calls and only reads external data.

This is third-party code. Review the repository files before installing.

What it does

Sidemantic is an open semantic layer where metrics are defined once and computed the same way from SQL, the CLI, Python, HTTP, PostgreSQL clients, notebooks and agents. Models are written in YAML, semantic SQL or Python, and existing definitions import from Cube, dbt MetricFlow, LookML, Power BI, Malloy and other formats. Queries run on DuckDB, BigQuery, Snowflake, ClickHouse, Databricks and more. For agents the repository ships a plugin for Claude Code and Codex with two skills: `modeler` builds and validates models, `webapp-builder` assembles a web app. The `sidemantic serve` command starts a web UI, HTTP API and MCP on one port.

Who it is for. Data analysts and engineers who want one definition of each metric and an agent to handle the modelling.

Good fit when

  • Metrics drifted across BI tools and one source of definitions is needed.
  • An existing Cube or MetricFlow project must move to another format.
  • An agent should answer data questions through vetted metrics rather than arbitrary SQL.
  • A database schema must become models with dimensions and relationships.

Not a fit when

  • A ready BI dashboard is wanted with no model setup.
  • The AGPL-3.0 license does not fit your product.
  • Data is small and plain SQL is enough.

Example request

Create an orders model from CSV, define revenue and order_count metrics, check it with `sidemantic validate` and show a query by status.

Limitations

The AGPL-3.0 license puts obligations on embedding into closed products. The agent part is small, two skills, and the main value is the metrics layer itself. Connecting a cloud warehouse needs your own credentials, and `serve` exposes data over the network, so put authentication in front of it. Some extras install separately. The project evolves quickly: import formats and extras change between releases, so pin a version in working projects. The demo site downloads more than 50 MB of data.

How to disable. Remove the plugin through the Claude Code or Codex plugin manager. Stop the `sidemantic serve` process if it was started.

FAQ

How do I try it quickly?

Run `uvx sidemantic demo`. It creates a demo project with DuckDB data and runs a first query.

How do I install the plugin in Claude Code?

`claude plugin marketplace add sidequery/sidemantic && claude plugin install sidemantic@sidequery`. Codex has a similar pair of `codex plugin` commands.

Which formats can be imported?

Cube, dbt MetricFlow, LookML, Power BI TMDL/DAX, Hex, Rill, Superset, Omni, Malloy and more. The adapter guide has the full list.

Is there an MCP server?

Yes. `sidemantic serve` starts a web UI, HTTP API and MCP on one port.

Which warehouses are supported?

DuckDB, MotherDuck, PostgreSQL, BigQuery, Snowflake, ClickHouse, Databricks, Spark SQL and ADBC sources.
