What it does
The skill installs as a regular SKILL.md for Claude Code, Claude Desktop or Claude on the web and covers the whole arc of working on a humanities paper: history, philosophy, literature, cultural studies, art history, religious studies, classics and adjacent fields where the prose itself, not code or a spreadsheet, is the deliverable. The 12 modes split by stage: modes H, I and J for the research question, a literature map and a plan-only outline before drafting; modes C and A for drafting new content and paragraph-level dialogue; mode B for chapter review through a four-layer critique and mode D for a devil's advocate with calibratable intensity from 1 to 5 and a methodology focus; modes E and F for writing-bottleneck help and draft revision with a revision-coach sub-mode; modes G and K before submission for a blind read and AI-use disclosure; mode L after defense or external review for integrating comments and a revision-dossier system. A separate set of scripts under scripts/ checks citation consistency, converts between Chicago, MLA, APA and GB7714 formats, and looks up source metadata through Crossref and OpenAlex. The project is released under CC BY-NC 4.0 with a Zenodo DOI and supports English and Chinese in parallel, including a SKILL.zh.md file and mirrored references under references/.
Who it is for. For graduate students and researchers in the humanities writing a long argumentative text in English or Chinese who want review, a devil's advocate and pre-submission checks in one skill.
Good fit when
- A research question is too broad, and mode H is needed to sharpen it into a working hypothesis
- A chapter draft is ready and needs a four-layer critique through mode B before it goes to an advisor
- An opponent is needed to find the weak point in the methodology, with adjustable intensity from 1 to 5 through mode D
- Before submission to a journal or a defense, the text needs an AI-trace check through mode G and an honest AI-use disclosure through mode K
- External reviewer comments came back after peer review, and they need folding into one revision-dossier system through mode L
Not a fit when
- A bibliography manager with its own source database is needed: the scripts/ tools only check citation consistency and convert format, with no database of their own
- The text is not in English or Chinese: references and SKILL.md ship in two language versions, and no other languages are covered
- A commercial product or resale of the output is needed: CC BY-NC 4.0 only permits non-commercial use
- The work is empirical with tables and statistics rather than argumentative: the author states outright this is not a tool for quantitative research
Example request
Review my philosophy chapter with mode B's four-layer critique and run mode D at intensity 3 on the methodology sectionLimitations
The CC BY-NC 4.0 license permits non-commercial use with attribution; commercial use needs separate arrangement. Source-metadata lookup runs through the external Crossref and OpenAlex services, so it needs network access, and accuracy depends on what those databases index. Only English and Chinese are supported at the level of SKILL.md itself and the reference material under references/; no other language is covered. The author describes the skill explicitly as a thinking partner, not a tool for sourcing citations or ready-made phrasing on the writer's behalf.
How to disable. Delete the skill folder from ~/.claude/skills or the project's .claude/skills. No separate disable step is needed; the skill makes no changes outside itself.
FAQ
How do I install Humanities Writing Companion for Claude Code?
Copy the skill folder from the repository into ~/.claude/skills or the project's .claude/skills. SKILL.md covers English text, SKILL.zh.md covers Chinese.
How is mode D different from a regular review?
Mode D is a calibratable devil's advocate with intensity set from 1 to 5 and a dedicated methodology focus, not general praise or an edit list like mode B's four-layer critique.
How does this skill help disclose AI use in a paper?
Mode K covers that: it helps write an honest account of exactly where AI was involved in preparing the text, before submission to a journal or a defense.
Does the skill need a subscription or payment?
No, the skill is released under CC BY-NC 4.0; use is free for non-commercial purposes with attribution.
Can the skill convert citation format?
Yes, the scripts under scripts/ convert between Chicago, MLA, APA and GB7714 formats and check citation consistency across the text, while source-metadata lookup runs through Crossref and OpenAlex.

README in short
The README opens by positioning the skill as a companion for the whole arc of the work, not a polishing or citation-sourcing tool, and gives a table of the 12 modes by stage from the research question to AI disclosure. It continues with the list of supported disciplines, a before-and-after showcase on sample text, install instructions, a comparison with adjacent tools and a design-philosophy section linking to a separate document.
