Manual install

npm create better-fullstack@latest

Starts the new-application generator. Choose the directory and required components before creating files.

How we review

Extended accessThe tool runs code or makes network calls and only reads external data.

  • The generator creates and overwrites files; separate checks can run builds and fetch dependencies.

This is third-party code. Review the repository files before installing.

What it does

Better Fullstack CLI assembles a starter from compatible frontend, backend and database parts. You can choose interactively or pass graph parts in one command. A shared compatibility engine handles choices across languages and runtimes. After creation, lifecycle commands add capabilities, update templates and check the project. The agent skill recommends a dry run before repeating the same command with writes enabled. A separate MCP interface provides structured schema lookup and planning.

Who it is for. For developers starting an application who want compatible components and later updates through the same generator.

Good fit when

  • Start an application with a chosen backend, frontend and database.
  • Check component compatibility before generating files.
  • Add a new stack part to a generated project.
  • Inspect a dry run before writing files or installing dependencies.

Not a fit when

  • You need to update an arbitrary project without generator configuration.
  • You expect automatic backups for every template update.
  • You require proven template provenance across releases.

Example request

Select compatible React and Python application parts and show a dry run without installing dependencies.

Limitations

Updating a previously generated project requires its `bts.jsonc`; arbitrary applications are not recognized automatically. Checks need the dependencies and toolchain for the selected language, and missing prerequisites count as errors. Template updates can overwrite files without automatic rollback, so save your changes in Git first. MCP update planning shows at most 32 KiB of content per file; exceeding that limit blocks applying the update.

How to disable. The CLI runs on demand without a persistent service. Revert generated file changes through your version control and preserve any needed project before deleting it.

FAQ

Can stack parts use different languages?

Yes. Parts specify category, ecosystem and option, with combinations checked by the shared compatibility engine.

Does the skill start a development server?

No. Its generation rules prohibit starting the server and require reporting next commands separately.

Can Git setup and dependency installation be skipped?

Yes. `--no-install --no-git` leaves those actions out of agent-driven scaffolding.

When does the agent choose MCP?

When explicitly requested, when CLI access is unavailable or when structured schema lookup is needed. The skill otherwise prefers an available CLI.

What does project-status inspection return?

Configuration and manifest prerequisites without running language toolchains. Executing the full checks is a separate operation.

README in short

The project supports several package managers, including npm, pnpm and Bun. Its visual builder and agent interfaces share the same stack-part selection logic.
