Why this level
- A personal ClickUp token lets the agent create, edit and delete tasks, comments and docs.
- Commands run bulk operations on tasks, so an agent mistake can touch many items at once.
Install
- Works in
In your terminal, with SkillFoxx CLI
npx skillfoxx add cli/clickup-cliDetects the agents on your machine, shows the access level and pins the version.

What it does
clickup-cli installs a `cup` command through which an agent works with ClickUp without calling the API directly. The skill teaches the agent which commands exist. In a terminal, task lists open as an interactive picker, and when piped the output is clean Markdown or JSON with the `--json` flag. It covers tasks with subtasks, dependencies and bulk operations, comments with real mentions, chat, docs, time tracking, checklists, custom fields, tags, goals and export. The `cup skill` command finds Claude Code, Codex and OpenCode and puts the skill file in the right directories.
Who it is for. Developers and project managers who run ClickUp tasks from Claude Code, Codex or OpenCode.
Good fit when
- An agent takes a task by ID, does the work and moves it to review with a comment and a commit hash.
- You want a morning summary of what is closed, in progress or overdue.
- An initiative needs a subtask for an edge case that turned up.
- Several workspaces switch through `cup profile` profiles.
Not a fit when
- You want to work through an MCP server: this client is a CLI with a skill file.
- Node 22 or newer is not available.
- The token cannot be given to an agent, since commands delete and change tasks.
Example request
Read task abc123, do the work, move it to review and leave a comment with the commit hash.Limitations
Node 22 or newer and a personal ClickUp token like `pk_...` are required. The token grants writes and deletes in the workspace, so start with a profile on a test workspace. 429 responses are retried with a bound, and 502, 503 and 504 gateway errors are retried only for reads, so after a failed write check the state in ClickUp. The docs section uses API version 3. The skill updates with the package, so run `cup skill` again after updating `cup`.
How to disable. Run `npm uninstall -g @krodak/clickup-cli` and delete the skill file from the agent directory. The config with the token lives in `~/.config/cup/config.json`.
FAQ
How do I install clickup-cli?
Run `npm install -g @krodak/clickup-cli && cup init`, then `cup auth` to verify. There is also Homebrew: `brew tap krodak/tap` and `brew install clickup-cli`.
How do I connect the skill to Claude Code or Codex?
Run `cup skill`: it detects Claude Code, Codex and OpenCode and installs the skill file itself. For manual setup there is a `--path` flag, for example `cup skill --path ~/.claude/skills/clickup/SKILL.md`.
How do I configure it non-interactively for CI?
Set `CU_API_TOKEN` and `CU_TEAM_ID` and no config file is needed. Or run `cup init --token pk_... --team ...`.
Why a CLI and not MCP?
The author argues that a CLI with a skill file has fewer moving parts: no server process and no protocol layer. The agent already knows how to run commands.
What does the agent do when a write fails?
The CLI does not replay a mutation automatically because the outcome may be uncertain. The agent checks the task's current state in ClickUp first and only then decides whether to repeat the write.
