What it does
redbook is a Node.js command-line tool for the Chinese social network Xiaohongshu (RedNote, 小红书). It searches notes and reads them with their comments, shows creator profiles and the recommendation feed. It also manages saved notes and publishes notes with images from your account. The analytics live in separate commands. The tool breaks down popular notes by title, engagement and comment themes and builds a content template from several notes. It compares creators by followers and engagement and scores competition for keywords. `redbook account-report` computes statistics for a list of accounts, and `redbook render` turns a Markdown file into PNG cards in the network's style. Rendering needs the puppeteer-core and marked packages installed separately. On install, redbook registers itself in Claude Code as a skill: a link to it appears in ~/.claude/skills and the agent gets the `/redbook` command. For OpenClaw there is an install through `clawhub install redbook`.
Who it is for. For marketers, social media managers and analysts who study the Xiaohongshu audience, watch competitors and run accounts there.
Good fit when
- You want to know which topics and keywords earn engagement on Xiaohongshu and where competition is thin
- You need to compare creators in your niche by followers, engagement and content style
- You want to dissect a viral note: the title, the ratio of likes to saves, the comment themes
- You run an account and want to check whether a note's reach is restricted: `redbook health`
- You need a monthly summary for a list of KOS and KOC accounts: `redbook account-report --file kos-accounts.txt --month 2026-07`
Not a fit when
- You need an official API with guarantees: the tool uses unofficial requests, and Xiaohongshu can change or shut them down at any time
- You need reliable automatic publishing: the publish request is often stopped by a captcha, and the author recommends browser automation for posting
- You need to read hundreds of notes in a row with no pauses: the platform restricts accounts that read notes often, so long research runs at a human pace
Example request
Analyze the topic "AI coding" on Xiaohongshu: find low-competition keywords, the top creators, and break down three viral notesLimitations
The tool works through unofficial Xiaohongshu requests and is not affiliated with the platform. The author warns that the interfaces can change or be shut down and asks you to use the tool at your own risk. Sign-in needs a logged-in browser session: by default redbook reads Chrome cookies and scans its profiles itself, and Safari or Firefox are chosen with the `--cookie-source` flag. On Windows with Chrome 127 or newer, cookies are read by launching Chrome in the background. Close the browser first, or pass the cookies with the `--cookie-string` flag. Node.js 22 or newer is required. On new accounts search can answer with access error -104.
How to disable. Remove the package with `npm uninstall -g @lucasygu/redbook`: the uninstall script removes the skill link from ~/.claude/skills. Saved cookies live in ~/.redbook/cookies.json; delete the file or run `redbook auth clear`. Then sign out in the browser and sign in again so the session refreshes.
FAQ
How do I install redbook and check sign-in?
Run `npm install -g @lucasygu/redbook` and then `redbook whoami`: the command shows the account the tool will act as. You can also hand the install to an agent with the author's ready phrase, which is in the install section on this page.
Do I need an API key or an account password?
No, redbook takes the cookies of a browser where you are already logged in. On macOS the system may ask for Keychain access; choose Always Allow. For the cloud and CI, cookies are saved to a file with `redbook auth export`. The file holds plaintext credentials with 0600 permissions, so do not commit it to Git or paste it into logs.
What does redbook batch-reply do?
It picks comments under a note by strategy: questions, most engaged, or unanswered. The replies go out under your name, so check them in preview first: the `--dry-run` flag turns it on, and it also runs while no reply template is set. The default gap between replies is 5 minutes with a 3-minute minimum, and one run sends at most 30 replies.
What does redbook health show?
It checks whether the reach of your notes is restricted by reading the hidden level field in the creator dashboard response. `redbook health --all --json` checks all notes at once and prints JSON.
How do I use redbook in Claude Code?
After install the skill connects by itself: the `/redbook` command appears with subcommands such as search, read, user and analyze-viral. You can also ask in plain language, for example to compare three creators or dissect a viral note. Claude chains the commands and returns a report.
