Plugin

Broad access

Why this level

  • The plugin keeps live cookies of your RedNote account on disk, and whoever gets the file gets the session
  • The script requests pages with those cookies, sets a browser User-Agent and turns off TLS certificate verification
  • The agent runs Python and shell commands and writes files into the Obsidian vault, and for video transcription it downloads and processes media files; automation with account cookies may break Xiaohongshu rules and get the account banned

What it does

RedNote to Obsidian exports posts from the RedNote (Xiaohongshu) platform into Obsidian notes. The plugin has three commands: `/xhs <link>` processes one post, `/xhs-batch <links>` handles several, and `/xhs-analyze [keyword]` summarizes and compares saved notes and looks for patterns. The skill takes post data with a single HTTP request using your cookies and parses the window.__INITIAL_STATE__ object on the page. For video it uses the platform's embedded subtitles first and falls back to a local Whisper transcription when there are none. Text from images is read by multimodal Claude. A note works as a decision tool: the heading states a conclusion, followed by two or three sentences of substance, a line on why the post matters to you and an answer to whether it is worth digging deeper. Details and metadata are collapsed. The personal-relevance line draws on Claude Code memory, so no extra setup is needed. Files go into the xhs folder of your Obsidian vault along with img and video subfolders.

Who it is for. For marketers, researchers and anyone who reads RedNote and wants to collect useful posts in a personal Obsidian knowledge base without manual copying.

Good fit when

  • You read RedNote and want to save useful posts to Obsidian as short notes that scan in five seconds
  • A post has a video and you need its text: the plugin takes embedded subtitles or transcribes the voice with Whisper
  • Posts contain images with text and you need that text: recognition runs through Claude's multimodal ability
  • A pile of links has built up and needs exporting in one go with `/xhs-batch`
  • Saved posts need comparing by topic: `/xhs-analyze` with a keyword looks for patterns

Not a fit when

  • You need data collection without your own account: the plugin works with your account's cookies
  • Your notes live somewhere other than Obsidian: the format and output folder are built for its vault
  • The cookies file cannot sit on disk: the plugin reads it on every run
  • You need fully unattended work: cookies expire and the export has to be repeated

Example request

/xhs https://www.xiaohongshu.com/explore/... and make a note for my Obsidian vault

Limitations

  • Access needs your RedNote cookies. The skill gives a script for the Chrome console that copies the cookies to the clipboard, and you save them to ~/cookies.json. When the cookies expire the skill notices and asks you to repeat the export.
  • The plugin writes notes to ~/Documents/Obsidian Vault/xhs. If your vault is elsewhere, change the constants in skills/xhs/SKILL.md.
  • Videos without embedded subtitles need `brew install ffmpeg` and `pip install mlx-whisper`. Without them such videos are not transcribed.
  • Parsing relies on the structure of the RedNote page, so it may stop working after changes on the platform's side.
  • Skill instructions are written in Chinese, and the README has an English version.

How to disable. Run `/plugin uninstall rednote-to-obsidian` in Claude Code. The ~/cookies.json file stays on disk: delete it if you no longer need the cookies, since it holds a live session of your account. Finished notes sit in the Obsidian vault and stay there.

FAQ

How do I install RedNote to Obsidian in Claude Code?

Run `/plugin marketplace add chenxiachan/xhs-claude-skills`, then `/plugin install rednote-to-obsidian@chenxiachan-xhs-claude-skills`. Videos without subtitles also need `ffmpeg` and `mlx-whisper`. Obsidian itself does not have to be installed as a program: only the vault folder is needed.

How does the plugin get access to RedNote posts?

Through your cookies. On first run the skill walks you through it: open xiaohongshu.com in Chrome under your own account, paste a given snippet into the console that copies the cookies to the clipboard, and save them to ~/cookies.json. After that they are used automatically, and when they expire the skill asks you to repeat the steps.

How does the plugin handle video and images?

For video it takes the platform's embedded subtitles first and falls back to local Whisper when there are none. Multimodal Claude reads text from images, and videos and images are stored in the video and img subfolders.

Where are notes saved and how do I change the folder?

By default in ~/Documents/Obsidian Vault/xhs, with files named like a date and a title. The vault path is a constant in skills/xhs/SKILL.md that you can change.

What is inside a note?

A heading with a single conclusion, two or three sentences of substance, a Relevance line on why it matters to you and a Worth digging line with an answer and reason. Details and metadata, meaning source, date, stats and tags, are collapsed.
