What it does
Smithery CLI connects agents to thousands of skills and MCP servers directly from the command line through the Smithery registry. Installation: `npm install -g smithery@latest` (Node 20+ is needed), and skills are installed with `npx skills add smithery/cli`. The access token is issued with the `smithery auth token` command. The repository moved to the arcadeai-labs organization and the old address smithery-ai/cli redirects. Version 1.2.0 from 31.05.2026, AGPL-3.0 license.
Who it is for. For developers who install MCP servers and skills from the Smithery registry and want to manage them with one command.
Good fit when
- You need to install MCP servers from the Smithery registry
- You need a CLI for managing skills and servers
- You need a registry access token from the command line
Not a fit when
- You need a non-copyleft license: this is AGPL-3.0
- You cannot depend on an external registry
Example request
Find an MCP server for calendar work in the registry, show its author and install it after my confirmationLimitations
The CLI works with an external registry: servers and skills from it run on your machine, so access is extended and each one needs checking. The AGPL-3.0 license imposes conditions on copying and network use. The latest release came out in May 2026. The README still has the old repository address.
How to disable. Remove the CLI with npm uninstall -g smithery and the token in the registry account.
