What it does
The MCP server connects an agent to the Bybit V5 API through 398 tools. The market block of 23 tools (candles, order book, tickers, funding rates, open interest) works without a key. With a key the agent reaches wallet balance, transaction history, fees, positions, leverage and margin, loans and earn products, referral queries, tax reports and copy trading. The agent can place orders and run strategies: TWAP, Chase Limit, Iceberg (up to 200 child orders) and POV for spot and derivatives. POV needs an interval of 5 to 3600 seconds and a quantity or value limit. Bots are included too (grid, martingale, DCA), along with 27 WebSocket tools for the order book, tickers, executions and positions. Every write operation requires a separate approval through the client's form. Requests can be signed with an HMAC-SHA256 key or your own RSA-SHA256 pair, and `BYBIT_TESTNET=true` switches the server to the testnet.
Who it is for. Traders and trading-bot developers on Bybit who want to manage an account and watch the market in plain language.
Good fit when
- You want a market snapshot for BTCUSDT or options: price, order book, funding rate, open interest
- You want to ask the agent about balance, positions and fees on your own account without opening the app
- A large order should be split with an Iceberg or TWAP strategy and the parameters dictated in words
- A trading scheme is first tried on the Bybit testnet with test funds
- A tax report for your operations is requested and downloaded straight from the chat
Not a fit when
- A key with the withdrawal permission: such a key does not belong with an agent, grant the minimum rights
- You only need charts and quotes with no trading: the market tools work without a key, so do not create one
- The MCP client does not show a write-approval form: the server relies on the client's answer, so use a trusted client
- You trade on another exchange: the server talks to the Bybit API only

Environment variables

Limitations
Private tools need a Bybit API key: either `BYBIT_API_KEY` with `BYBIT_API_SECRET`, or `BYBIT_API_KEY` with `BYBIT_API_PRIVATE_KEY_PATH`. If both secrets are set, the server picks RSA and writes a warning to its log.
Node.js 20.6 or newer is required.
The OneTime strategy mode is unavailable through MCP because the API ignores limits in it. POV always needs a quantity or value limit, and a duration cannot replace it.
Use of the server is subject to Bybit's terms.
How to disable. Remove the server with `claude mcp remove bybit` or delete the `bybit` block from `mcpServers` in the client config, then revoke the API key under API Management on Bybit.
FAQ
Do I need an API key just to look at prices?
No, the 23 market tools work without a key. A key is needed for the account, positions, orders and private streams.
How can I try it without real money?
Create a key on testnet.bybit.com and set `BYBIT_TESTNET=true` in the server variables. All calls go to the testnet.
How do I add the server to Claude Code?
Run `claude mcp add bybit -- npx -y bybit-official-trading-server@latest` and restart Claude Code. `~/.claude/settings.json` is the wrong file for this: Claude Code reads MCP servers from `~/.claude.json`.
Can the agent trade with no confirmations?
Every write operation goes through a separate approval form in the client. Always allow in Claude Desktop does not replace it, but the server relies on the client's answer, so pick a trusted client.
Should I pick an HMAC or an RSA key?
The type follows the key you created on Bybit. A system-generated key is signed with `BYBIT_API_SECRET`, a self-generated RSA pair with `BYBIT_API_PRIVATE_KEY_PATH`. Setting both is unnecessary.
