Why this level
- The agent changes the document in your open Aseprite through a local bridge on 127.0.0.1
- The install for Codex, Gemini and Cursor rewrites the agent's configuration, although a backup is made

What it does
Aseprite AI Artist lets an agent draw in the Aseprite window you already have open. The agent works on the document on screen one step at a time, and every step is undone by one Ctrl+Z. You ask, for example, for a 32 by 32 knight in the PICO-8 palette with a four-frame idle, and watch a palette, silhouette, shading, layers and a cycle appear. The `/aseprite:studio` command runs the whole job in stages: connect, a short brief on size and palette, a concept, drawing, animation, an independent review and export to a spritesheet, GIF or PNG set. After every step that changed pixels the agent looks at the result. It draws a silhouette as a text grid where one character is one pixel, reads the canvas back in the same form and edits only the wrong characters. The bundle has 14 skills, from `brief` and `palette` to `tileset` and `export`, and a pixel-art knowledge base of 62 rules with templates and palettes, read as rules:// resources. In Claude Code and omp four specialists work: palette-smith, rig-builder, animation-director and the read-only pixel-critic.
Who it is for. For game developers and pixel artists who work in Aseprite and want to hand silhouettes, coloring, animation and export to an agent while keeping control of the document.
Good fit when
- You need a sprite from scratch by description: size, palette and view given in words, while the agent draws and shows its progress
- A flat finished drawing needs light and shading from a chosen direction
- A character must be split into layers with a walk, attack or idle cycle and tags
- You need a tileset with a transition, such as grass to dirt, for an engine
- You need export to a spritesheet with an atlas, GIF or PNG and a review of the result by an independent critic
Not a fit when
- You need large complex illustrations or photorealism: pixel art is built on small sizes and palettes
- You want to rework someone's file with no open Aseprite window: with the window detached the tools refuse to edit files on disk
- You have no Aseprite 1.3 or newer and no Node.js 22.6 or newer
- You expect guaranteed quality: the authors have not yet measured the effect of the independent review on results
Example request
/aseprite:studio a fox, 32 by 32, sleeping curled up, a four-frame idle loopLimitations
You need Aseprite 1.3 or newer and Node.js 22.6 or newer on macOS, Linux or Windows. The Aseprite extension installs with a separate command, after which Aseprite must be closed and reopened. The authors got their best results with Claude Opus 5.5.
Quality depends on the model. A table on the project site compares models on three fixed prompts, and the authors call the conclusions early. The authors describe the independent review as adding roughly one critique per round. Aseprite is a trademark of Igara Studio, and the project is not affiliated with it.
How to disable. In Claude Code remove the plugin through the /plugin menu. Remove the Aseprite extension in the program's own extension manager. For Codex, Gemini and Cursor the configuration is backed up before installing, so you can restore it by hand.
FAQ
How do I install Aseprite AI Artist in Claude Code?
First run npx @pebbly/aseprite-ai-artist install-extension and restart Aseprite. Then in Claude Code run /plugin marketplace add with-pebbly/aseprite-ai-artist and /plugin install aseprite@aseprite-ai-artist. Verify with npx @pebbly/aseprite-ai-artist doctor.
How do I connect the plugin to Codex, Gemini CLI or Cursor?
Run npx @pebbly/aseprite-ai-artist install codex and swap codex for gemini, cursor or --all. The configuration is backed up first, and --dry-run shows the change without writing it. OpenCode 2.x has a separate install opencode command and a plugin add step.
Can it work without an Aseprite window?
Yes, in headless mode: npx @pebbly/aseprite-ai-artist serve --headless --aseprite /path/to/aseprite. It is meant for batch jobs and CI, and files are saved to disk only when the agent saves. In normal mode, if the window is not attached the agent asks you and does not switch to a hidden run by itself.
How does the agent check what it drew?
After every step that changed pixels it looks at the result. The final is judged by a separate critic who did not draw the picture: it first describes what a person who knows nothing of the intent sees, then scores it. A fix stays only if the critic prefers the new version in a blind comparison.
Which model draws best?
The authors name Claude Opus 5.5 as the best from their tests. The project site has a model leaderboard on the same fixed prompts with written criteria and a gallery of works.

README in short
There are 18 tools, grouped by noun (draw, layer, frame, export), so each move takes less room in context. The bridge between the agent and Aseprite listens only on 127.0.0.1, and you can submit your work to the gallery on the project site.
